I heard that there's going to be a block of flats built specifically for Asians. Now, I'm not at all racist, but this is pathetic.

If it was the other way round - a block of flats built only and specifically for white people - then there would be uproar from ethnic minorities. What are your views on this?
Sorry I can't provide details, I'll try and find a link.

Very true, but surely it's better to have a body making sure everyone is treated the same, as it's blatantly obvious that some people can't seem to manage it by themselves...

I find it sadder that we have a "Race Watchdog" in the first place.

New homes block is for 'Asians only'
By Paul Waugh, Evening Standard Whitehall Editor
27 April 2004
Race watchdogs have been called in to investigate a state-of-the-art London housing block that is being reserved for Asians only.

The development, which will provide sheltered housing for 40 Muslim "elders" when it opens in the East End this summer, has triggered controversy because white pensioners will be excluded.

The Commission for Racial Equality has now been asked to check whether the Sonali Gardens project breaks the Race Relations Act.

Criticism of the project comes from both Conservatives and Liberal Democrats. Tories warned today that the block was a form of "segregation" that could be seized on by the British National Party in its bid for votes in the capital, particularly in the East End.

The 40 new homes, together with a day centre, have been built in a joint project by Tower Hamlets council and Circle 33 housing association on the site of an old people's home that catered for all communities.

Three other new sheltered housing blocks in the borough are not earmarked just for Asians.

Critics point out that its specialist services, such as halal meals, Bengali-speaking carers and Islamic praying facilities, could be offered within a mixedrace development. Lib-Dem councillor Janet Ludlow said: "The most important thing is to make sure we are acting legally."

The 1976 Race Relations Act and its 2000 amendment state that a discriminatory service can only be offered if an authority can prove that a specific need is not currently being met.

But a recent council report admitted that the level of need among elderly Bangladeshis was "a hidden need".

David Davis, the shadow home secretary, said: "There would rightly be outrage if a council offered a whites-only housing block.

"I firmly believe that we should look to achieve integration rather than segregation in our society. This is the sort of thoughtless policy that feeds extremism."

Sirajul Islam, lead councillor for social services at Tower Hamlets, said: "We certainly do not advocate segregation in Tower Hamlets.

"But the 'one size fits all' approach to public services is no longer acceptable in 21st century Britain.

"Tower Hamlets is fortunate to have a diverse mix of communities and the council strives to ensure that its services are responsive to the differing and changing needs of its residents."

A spokesman for the CRE said: "We would seek to understand the full facts of why someone was doing this and on the basis of those facts whether it was within the law or a breach of the law."

I'll hold judgement until I hear the full details, but it doesn't sound good.

Even putting aside the issues of racial discrimination, by encouraging people to segregate along ethnic lines, you drastically cut interaction between people of different groups.
And really that's the key way to knock problems of racism on the head - let people get to know each other and accept each other as people.

Oh well, in a world full of nobs you can't expect people not to do stupid things.

Good job I'm holding judgement, eh? :^)

I heard about this on the radio somewhere. To be honest it is like reversed racism. The scale has tipped so much towards the other direction that this has happened, and it really is an utter joke.

It bares slight resembulances to this case my dads friend got into jobwise. There were three people and one had to be fired. He, being a white guy, and just if not more qualified than the other two people who were in the running, a black person and a gay. Anyway, he was the one to get the chop, probably the company didn't want to be seen as discriminating. Apparantly he is sueing them now, and rightly so, because this is completely the wrong why to decide if a person should be fired.

If it is true then it's a totally stupid idea. It's this type of thing that creates racism and tension. Putting everyone on a level playing field and encouraging education into each other's cultures and teaching people tolerance and respect is the only way to at least stop racism to a certain degree (i doubt we'll ever totally get rid of racism because no matter how much education is given there's always the ignorant people out there who just hate people for the sake of it)

I think Disingenious has the right idea.

It was built with the rising amount of asians in mind rather than making strict segregations.

It sound like a ridiculous idea to me, surely it's segregation at it's worst. It's saying, no you can't live here because your white. If it was saying no non-white people, then as someone said there would be a huge uproar about it.

Brings back shades of America before MLK doesn't it...

I doubt the credibility of this story. Excluding one group based on ethnicity in any British establishment is in serious violation of the law. I suspect that this is a flat or housing bloc designed to house a recent flow of Asian immigrants and that if another group wished to move there they would be allowed. Obviously, if this story is true in its entirety, then it is an outrage by the local authority involved.

It will almost certainly become another subject to rave on about by the BNP and their ilk in either case. Perhaps you could forward a link, no offence intended good sir, but posting a random story like this, with no reference to the source or even the area concerned, strikes me as somewhat rash.

Still, I will keep tabs on this story and see if I can find it on the BBC world news site.

Good day.
