A bit more descriptive writing. The task here was to describe a scene at daybreak. Hope you enjoy it :-).

----------

Every person in the village was alert after the six-months of darkness – each face was set with a mixture of wonder and apprehension, and every eye was set on the eastern horizon. There was a thick silence, broken only by the call of the birds in the trees to the southern side. Even the children knew not to call out.

The mighty sun broke the ancient skyline and every man, woman and child in the village were drawn to their feet, as if trying to move closer. It painted the innocent sky in a way that drew the breath of all who saw it, and though it hurt to look, those that did hadn’t the willpower to withdraw from the magnificent spectacle of light before them.

A radiant bolt struck the tall trees, the brilliant white snow atop each now entirely visible next to the thick green of the heavily-leaved lower branches. Two birds shot out of the dense foliage, flew up across the blue and over the village. The sudden movement shook the uppermost branches of the tree, and flakes of snow drifted downwards to settle on the untouched white carpet.

Another luminous ray hit the rooftops of the buildings in the village, penetrating the houses through every gap it could find. The powerful, glowing sun had risen and engulfed all that stood before it. There was not a person in the village who wasn’t compelled to watch, not an eye that didn’t reflect the dazzling exhibition before it.

Finally, the villagers were allowed to breathe. And in that one breath, every possible worry or anxiety they had was removed. Despite the thousands visible for a half year beforehand, this solitary, commanding star had brought a smile to the faces of everyone who experienced its awakening.
