A few minutes into the operation and the screen just fell back to the system DOS... no BSOD (which I guess is nice), no error, nothing.... all that was displayed was "99" repeated several times for a few lines. OK, reboot I thought.
Except, it didn't work. Went into BIOS but instead of booting up XP afterwards, it displayed the pairs of 99 again. Usually, any "system wide" error (I've had a few what with multiple Linux installation attempts taking its toll on non standard hardware) is fixed by booting up the XP CD and just copying over the setup files.
And at last, it works - but now I have to select from three OS when only one is correct, which I guess is no major hassle since I hardly reboot from this system. Obivously, the bootloader was probably damaged in that backing up incident. but the Magic XP CD has written over it again. W00t, I guess. And a major sigh of relief.
i let my freinds children play on my very old computer and they started clicking things and amazingly they managed to wreck it by reformatting my hhd which i think is very clever for a couple of 7 year olds who only just grasped how to load the games.
P.S the windows cd was in the drive hence easy to destroy.
i tryied to make it come back but i needed to re-install the windows, luckly i salvaged all the parts from that computer for my other one.
but i don't have a clue how you did that.
Close one! I bet that had all of your Uni work on it aswell, no?
It would of been the bootloader that had been damaged, because the exact same thing happened to me a couple of weeks back, just got a screen with "LL 99 99 99 99 .." etc, wouldn't let me do anything until I booted off the XP disc, went to the "repair" feature and tapped in "fixmbr", and it was all sorted!
You've made me consider backing everything up to a CD now!
