I have to say somthing about so called 'music' of today.
If you listen to your radio today, or look at channels like 'The Box' and 'kiss', most of the time you will be looking at people singing over music that they have not composed.
one example would be Uk garage, sure the singing (sorry, 'MCing') may be good to hear, but if you forget that, you are only listening to elctronicaly made music!
That MC you see is being payed only to sing, things about "women they sooo fine" and "ooh baby come with me and i'll show you a great time".

I reckon that will take them about 30 minutes to come up with those lyrics. But you also have that music, that he is apparently making him self, i'll tell you what is making that music, Intergrated Circuits! its has all been made using a simple electronic program, with the musical components already inside it, just programed in!
Now this MC is getting money fame and praise, because of some guy working in a factory making IC's for a living, and some other guy putting those tools of electronic music together.

This MC is not composing music, he is picking out sounds from a machine, then putting some poorly thought up so called lyrics with it. They call it music, garage music to be precise, in my opinion, that is where it belongs, a garage! and it should stay there and never see the light of day!

On the other hand you have pop groups, who........SING!, that is it, all they do is sing, and my hat is off to them they can often have very great voices...But, they are not composing this music they are singing to or even the lyrics they are singing! They leave that up to guys in a little room with a pen and a piece of paper. The music is left up to a few proffesional musicians (Who could be out in there own band making some really stunning music).
The pop bands also get allot of praise and cahs in their pockets.

however there is another musical scene... Rock music, be it classic rock, modern rock, or some realy heavy rock, they are composing thier music, they are writing thier lyrics and slaving for hours, with a keyboard a guitar, thinking! - and there is the difference, 'THINKING'. these bands are thinking, they are using their minds to make some decent music, and my my they do achieve some great sounds!

Now maybe all that does not apply to some, garage, pop, or rock bands, but it is how i see it.

Rock music is also becoming allot more popular now than before, it will soon take over the pop scene, but...will pop claim rock to be their own?

I think that the true spirit of music is that it is good to listen to. How the music is created is not very relevant.

If a piece of music is created from sound the DJ does not create there isn't a problem. Remember that the DJ or whoever will be a composer, as they will choose the sounds and the order, pitch, etc in the same way a classical composer would produce a score. The only difference is the nature of the sounds used differs. Classical composers may have played the music, but could well have left that to paid performers.

In a way the composers would not have the spirit of music by your definition badger, as they would only arrange other people's sounds. Some of the musicians would only be paid to sing, so they don't have it either. The

Remember that the voice is an instrument, and singing requires skill, in the same way as playing an another instrument does.

I am not very fond of garage music, but it is still music. It is in the same spirit as other music.

When I was writing that I was thinking about the true spirit of music! When music was first started it was mostly classical as you said, the musicians would have only used manual instruments, and were greatly praised for it all. Rock is much the same, but now is starting to get more electrical in bands such as ‘Linkin Park’, but you have to keep up with the times!
Most Rock bands are still only using their guitars, bass guitars and drums, which is how I see music should be with REAL instruments that are played with skill and style.
The sounds made by garage artists are all pretty much electronically manufactured, but in rock and classical the sound come from skill and style of playing an instrument, whilst doing the singing at the same time.

So it is my opinion, and some of you may say that it is biased, but it is not an opinion unless it is. If you really want the TRUTH about real music, well there is no truth. Music is all about biased opinions. It is an ongoing battle that will be fought for along time, and there will be no overall winner, ever.

‘Real’ music? The dictionary defines music as an arrangement of sounds. That’s what music is right? Sound.

Ok, weather its Garage music, Rock music or Classical its all sound, which makes it all music. People have to understand that music comes in different forms and some people enjoy a different types of music to others.

You can’t really say that Garage music is not ‘real’ music. You could see Garage music really as the modern classical music. People back then using their instruments such as Pianos to make music and now we have electricity, so, the Garage sound is made by electrical components instead of manual ones.

But, the thing is, I see Garage music going out of fashion very soon. That’s the thing, Garage music is in fashion and what happens to trends and fashions? They soon die. One such example is the electro-pop sound of the 80’s. The 1980’s will be remembered for this music and maybe the decade which started in the year 2000 will be remembered for Garage sounds. But this will die and like many other forms of music evolve into another form.

But where did this trend of Garage music start off? Well, the way I see it is that many trends start in teenagers. Garage and electrotronic sounds hit the clubs which is a great social gathering for the youngsters. The youngsters hear and dance to this music and grow up liking it.

I like rock music, I started liking it because it was what I would hear most, as my friends liked it. If you are in a club all the time, you are sure to grow up like Garage sounds and despising rock sounds. But why? But what I find quite amazing is the way people grow up to the type of music they listen to.

You know what I mean, the way people act/dress because of the music they listen to. How I see it is that for Garage music, their listeners grow up thinking that they are better then anyone else. The way they speak is quite amazing. Since my older sister has been hanging around with different people from college and listening to Garage music her vocabulary has changed. You now get a lot of “Nah’s” and “Mate”. It’s amazing how music can turn into a lifestyle.

But really, in the long run, people will listen to what they think is ‘real’ music. It’s their own opion. We must remember that music is a combination of sounds, me taping these keyboard keys right now is making music, not that it will be liked though, but it is still music.
