A mate of mine used to life in Wilmcote near Stratford-on-Avon and from his front door to his local's front door was 10 steps - it was on the opposite side of a narrow road.
It was 0 steps for me, though ...

I did count them on the way back. I've got better things to do on the way there. (Meaning that I get the train there but not back because the last one is at half eleven.)
Try counting them on the way back, you might get a different result.
