Hello, intelligent-PC folk.

I'm currently buying bits and bobs for a PC, but want to ask a software related question.

I have a few bits of software (namely older PC games) that I'd like to run on my new PC. However, it will have Windows XP on it, because it's cool.

But alas! These games don't support XP. Or XP doesn't support them. Whatever.

So, I'd like to install Windows XP on one bit, Windows 98 on another, and be able to pick on start up, or at least, change it when running, to start one or other from within one version. If you see what I mean.

And no, there is no patches for Final Fantasy VIII (8, NOT 7).

Methods? Help?

Please? :D

Basically, Windows Xp uses a different style of installing/running programs than previous version of Windows. This means that programs designed to run on 95/98/NT/2000 might encounter problems when you run them.

As I said, if an error arises, right-click the shortcut on the desktop, and put it into compatability mode.

Done.

Yeah, what the hell is that for?

Ah, thanks Azul. I was thinking the non-PM option you mentioned would probably work, but wasn't too sure.

I think I have a copy of PM tucked away somewhere, although it is probably out of date...

Right-Click any icon on your desktop, select the compatability tab and choose Windows 98...

Oh, and PM is extremely easy to use, so there's no worries there.

I'm fairly sure of what I'm saying here, for once, because it's something I've done a few times.

I think the first thing you'd want to do is install Windows 98. I'd then recommend you get/"accquire" Partition Magic, and with that create a new partition, choose it's size etc.

You'd then reboot, install Win XP, and during set up, it'll most likely tell you that there's already an OS installed. It'll give you the option to format it and overwrite, or install on a seperate partition. You'll do that, and it gives a list of all partitions. You'd select the one you just created, and voila.

I *think* another method is, is just to install 98, skip the whole Partition Magic thing, reboot, attempt to install XP, and it'll say all of the above.

I'd recommend PM though, because that way you get to choose drive letter, size etc etc.

So yey. I think I actually helped someone.
Oh, and I'm not sure if you can get a Partition Magic demo or what have you - if not, just "accquire" it or something.
