Of the mid range cards the FX 5700 is the best, but only by a fraction. Plus it costs more than the Radeon 9600XT. The 9800XT is better than the 5900XT for various reasons.
You could do as cookie monster said and get a 9800 then overclock it. But I would just go the whole hog and buy a 9800 Pro for £150. Simple and hassle free.

The non pro seems to be about from middle range to high only the memory clock speed is about 20 below the 9700 pro.
Get a non-pro then flash the bios.
You can get a Radeon 9800 128mb for £123.32 or a 9800 PRO 128mb for £152.69 these days. Maybe even less if you shop around. I just looked in the first place I thought of.
Radeon 9600 Pro's are normally a good bet.
