A realtime operating system can be used to control traffic lights, i.e if a pedestrian wants to cross at the crossing (by signalling the button), the system will change the car traffic lights to red, and let the pedestrian cross. Otherwise, leave the traffic lights on green.

There's a textbook edition too, but the study guide has all the necessary content. A good replacement for a lazy teacher.

An OS that handles "a number of events which happen in parallel and at unpredicatble times" eg. OS that controls greenhouse
Network:
Controls who logs on to the network by means of usernames and passwords, and also handles access rights.
Interactive:
Opposite of Batch in a way, the user interacts directly with the OS, ie Windows/Mac OS/Linux etc
Hope it helps, sounds like you drew the shrt straw with your teacher there. This stuff was drilled into me at the beginning of the year ;)

The last I don't know. Haven't done any commputing qualifications (having said that I only have 1 qualification at the mo, an A* GCSE in Stats which I took a year early, with the other 9 looming in the summer) so I'm sorry for my lack of knowledge.
