No more stupid arguements please!
If you dislike a console, or game, please tell us why!
And please could somebody define to me what exactly a 'hardcore gamer' is and also what's a 'casual gamer'?
I can see why people would use the term casual gamer. Someone that plays games every now and then, but probably isn't so bothered about them that they'd come discuss them.
But that doesn't mean that every gamer that isn't 'casul' is 'hardcore', does it?
What really got me started on this topic was some freak over at the PS2 forum claiming that the PS2 was not a 'hardcore' gamers machine.
I simply could not see the sense in this. Surely if you like to play lots of games, and that type of game is available on the PS2, then that is a vialbe platform for a 'hardcore gamer'.
I think it's probably just a term thrown around to try to show some superiority.
"My points are more valid than yours for I am a 'hardcore' gamer"
Anyone got any thoughts on the definitions of hardcore and casual?
Any thoughts on the way people define themselves as hardcore to try to make a point?
Anyway leaving my little comment aside, i agree with Wookie Master. I don't really think there is such a person as a hardcore or casual player.
Darkreaper
Balanced gamers are ones that can appriciate that there are other good consoles out there. They may not own all of them. The may have an N64 for example, but due to lack of money havent bought a DC or a PS2, or they may be waiting for the GC.
However, these people do recognise that the other consoles exist, and they do have good games on them. It's just that for what ever reason, they have their N64 at the moment.
The other sort of people, who i suppose should be unbalanced gamers (though this sounds like they are freaks who do strange things to animals...), are the sort that has there DC or PS2 or whatever. It maintains there's is the best. On being asked why there's is the best, they just reply "'cos it is". Which is blatantly bering stupid.
I would consider myself to be a balanced gamer, as although i have a DC, i can appriciate the PS2 is a powerful machine with a lot of potential. I dont go round saying "the PS2 is pants, buy a DC".
But for people who are undecided, i do recommend a DC, but i have arguments to back up my point. Things like price, current games etc.
Hope this makes sense as i've written it completely off the top of my head.
PS2 is not a hardcore gamers machine.
Sega make games for hardcore gamers.
So it would logically follow that:
Sega now make games for PS2.
PS2 is a hardcore gamer's machine.
Having said that, I don't think there is such a thing as a 'hardcore gamer', and I agree with you, meka, that it's an attempt to sound superior to others in some way.
I have often played games for 36 hours at a time - or more - because I have found a game extremely addictive, and was 'desperate' to get through and complete it. I've also been playing videogames for 22 of my (nearly) 30 years on this Earth. Such behaviour would in my view qualify me as a 'hardcore' gamer, if such a beast existed.
On the other hand, I have sometimes gone for more than a week without even looking at my console, let alone actually playing on it. That would supposedly make me a 'casual' gamer.
So which am I? Neither, because neither exist. There are people who enjoy videogames, and there are people who don't. It's a Marmite thing - you love it, or hate it. Of those who do enjoy videogames, I don't think that there are any 'degrees of enjoyment' - people's taste in games differs as wildly as their taste in music. I hate Jazz music, but that doesn't mean that it is rubbish. Similarly there are no 'good' or 'bad' games, just those that appeal to a larger number of people.
However... if I was pushed to define a 'hardcore' gamer, it would have to be someone who is interested purely in gameplay and the enjoyment obtained from playing a game. They wouldn't care less which platform a game was on, as long as they found it enjoyable. As such, they would own every platform available, and would buy every new game released every week on every platform. They'd have to do that, because they wouldn't want to rely on a reviewer's opinion, and would have to play it for themselves.
They would be happy that Sega are still producing software, even if it is on PS2 and other platforms; after all, it is the software that is the game, not the machine it is running on.
They wouldn't give a damn which platform was technically superior, as long as there are enjoyable games available for it, and they certainly wouldn't waste precious playing time making long posts on a discussion forum!
As far as I know, such a person does not exist - therefore there is no such thing as a 'hardcore' gamer. The person making the post in question is obviously not a hardcore gamer, as they are far to blinkered by what each machine is or is not capable of.
