I thought long, and I thought hard. I thought about that statement, and about it’s complete lack of any punctuation, it could mean any number of things. Was it ‘Think “don’t phone whilst driving”’? It was a possibility, so I decided to do it. I thought “Don’t phone whilst driving”, but as I never do, I don’t really have anyone to phone, it didn’t really have any effect on me.
So I reconsidered the statement. Perhaps it was ‘Think “don’t phone” whilst driving’, so for the next couple of miles I played that through my head constantly, like a broken record. “Don’t phone, don’t phone, don’t phone.” I guess it worked, because during this time I didn’t phone anyone, but I’m sure I’ve already told you, I never do phone anybody. I did think for a short while about people I could phone, but no one really came to mind.
As I was thinking about phoning people, I thought that I’d probably got the statement wrong again, so I reconsidered it once more. Maybe it was “Think, don’t phone, whilst driving”. Instead of phoning people up, I should be thinking about things, pondering the meaning of life, philosophising, thinking of girls.
It was about this time that I came to a sudden stop, thanks to the vehicle in front of me. With all of my thinking, I hadn’t noticed it slow down, and had gone right into the back of it.
As I stand here, trying to pick my bumper of the road, I think that perhaps the sign meant I should be thinking about my driving, concentrate a bit more. It’s funny though, because that’s just what I was doing before I saw the sign.
Nice.
