Pioneer has now produced a DVDR drive, already available in the US for a cool $1k, about £600. It does everything a CDR drive does but with DVDs aswell. This drive will ultimately allow home users to record DVD movies and games that can be played back in normal DVD players and home consoles.
I say ultimately because Im not sure if the copy protection systems built into the PS2 have been broken yet, I would imagine special piracy software would be needed. However this will only be a matter of time. The DVD movie protection system DeCSS was broken a while back so I imagine DVD movie piracy software would be readily available.
What do you think this means for the future of the videogame industry???

It probably wont effect the PS2 that much, as you said protection built into the PS2 will hinder pirates. Besides which software piracy has its problems, i.e. dodgey copies which dont work, and possibly even viruses.

Although film piracy may be more of a problem.

Perhaps Sony should have made a special disc format like Segas 1GB discs or Nintendos new Gamecube discs!

Well, it was only a matter of time before DVDR became available widely, and I'm sure Sony are currently working on lots of different ways to combat the risk of piracy that will be sure to follow.

Overall, piracy of the PSX CD-ROM game disks didn't 'seem' to do Sony a great deal of harm, although it must have been a contributing factor to many developers going under.

If Sony can produce its games in future for the PS2 with anti-piracy measures coded into the disks, they can't really do much more. Alternatively, they could build some sort of hardware into the PS2s in production to prevent them from playing copied disks.

The battle against software piracy is always ongoing, so I'm sure they've got it well in hand.
