Hello there, I've been reading up on a few tutorials on CSS (thanks Tyla), and I find it excellent that there is so much you can use to syle a website.

Anyway, i've realised something thats quite a serious issue concerning my website, and people viewing it in different resolutions. You see, my website is made under 1280 x 1024, but if someone with a 1024 x 768 resolution or below try's to view it, its all messed up.

How is it possible to ensure my website looks alright under all resolutions?

(Yes its rubbish, I know)

Hmmm, I think i've fixed my resolution problem, but the site is only respectable looking in Firefox, not sure about IE.

Anyway, Thankee for the help.

z-index is the same as thinking in 3D space. You have X, Y & Z. The z-index allows you to correctly stack layers from 0 - whatever so a layer/div with the z-index of 2 will overlap a layer/div with the z-index of 0 or 1.

the "inherit" value does exactly as it sounds, it inherits its value form the parent element.

Have a look at: http://www.blooberry.com/indexdot/css/propindex/all.htm

Wow.

Your sites are impressive Tyla.

Now to be annoying, could you explain what these property's mean?

z-index: auto;
visibility: inherit;

Currently you should accomodate for IE6/5.5, NN7 and Mozilla, but in theory, if your using validated code (CSS & xHTML) it should work across everything bar a couple of hacks needed for Mac browsers and IE5.5.

Browsers have finally caught on to the idea of standards compliancy, so as newer browsers come out, they conform to the W3C guidelines making like much simpler. (except in the case of IE7/Longhorn which will truly f##k things up again!)

My general rule is that if my stats for a certain browser are below 5%, I ignore it.

Tyla, where do you stop caring if it works? I mean, I make all my sites to run in IE and NN, but largely neglect Opera and things like that. Should I be doing this, or can I get away with it in the long run?

Here you go, have a look at the source code for this: http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/socialpolicy/

Pure CSS and cross browser (well with IE5.5/6, Moz, Firefox, Camino, & NN6/7) Maybe a couple fo bugs, but close enough as long as it accounts for the major end of the browser market

It's not working properly.

Make it using a table for the time being, unless you're sooper-dooper good at CSS it will never look 100% perfect.

A site like that can be made using a table in a few minutes and it will look far far better. Plus you can still link it to a stylesheet and change borders etc...
