1. If you dont mind shopping on the net, you should look on there before anywhere else. I would advise you to buy from a popular company that has been reccommended by others, browsing on the net is a very wise choice as it normally has very good (Online only) offers.
2. Warranty, IMO this is one of the most important features you to look out for when buying a console, or anything for that matter. I would not advise you to buy second hand consoles as you will probably not be covered for anything and if for some reason your console was to become faulty you would either have to phone up the company asking for a Repair/Exchange or you'd have to buy another one. At least with a Warranty you know your Xbox can easily get Repaired/Exchanged for free as long as its within the Warranty period.
3. If possible you should find a games forum www.ukchatforums.com, most people are very helpful and will give you advice and sites to help you choose where to get your console from. If you cant get onto a forum then you can try www.Google.co.uk to search for a (Trustworthy) site with advice.
4. When choosing a console you should think not just what features the console has but also what range of games it has, for example if you were to choose a Gamecube it offers you not as many games as the PS2 but it has lots of great exclusives inc. Zelda: Wind Waker, Metroid Prime and lots more. If you are looking for a console with great online play the Gamecube might not be the best choice as it does not have alot of online games although, the Xbox and PS2 might be a better choice as they have many online games.
5. Once you have brought your desired console you should not just start it without reading the manual, it tells you many things you might not of known before eg. How to turn the console on and off the right way. If you are planning to play your game in a small room you should note that the console can pick up alot of dust. When you've finished playing a game on the console DO NOT leave the disc inside as it can seriously damage your console as well as your disc.
