So far this is more or less my opinion but I haven't even considered how I'm going to say it or anything. Any new information you think I should consider to include in my argument and any ways you could imagine to tackle the apathy of youths in politics that would be great.
I have decided to bring up the political issue of reducing the voting age to 16 (we can bring up any political youth issue). I believe that if we were to allow 16 year olds to vote in the next general election that it would be nothing more than a random pick of the bunch for most part due to the lack of knowledge that many of Scotland's and indeed Britain's youths have about politics. The reason the youth of today aren't concerned about politics is because they don't know enough about it and we aren't engaged by it enough. We are living in a technological age when almost anything is available ot anyone thanks to the super fast internet access, our mobile phones and sky T.V. We can get and be given so many things that we do not want in such a short time but politicians have not exploited the advantages of modern day technology. Instead of getting e-mails about choosing a political party we get newsletters and e-mails from friends. All of which is well and good but it just highlights the fact that the government is doing nothing to seek us out just hope we'll be drawn to them. As I have said though if we can get all our hearts desire from our computers then why would we wanrt to seek them out? A leather chair, computer and T.V. It's a lazy mans dream and the reality for many.
I am therefore of the opinion that because the government doesn't do enough to try and secure our vote to grant us the vote would be pointless due to our total lack of knowledge given to us. Ok maybe we could get a pamphlet or something but I haven't read a book since I was forced to in English and the T.V. guide is the height of my reading at home. Why would any youth want to sit at home on a saturday night and read a riveting pamphlet about the pros of Green or the cons of Labour? The government expects too much from the youth of today and the only way to get rid of our apathy is for them to actually engage us in our own environments, educate us in the politics of Britain and only then, when we're ready, enfranchise us.
As I say that's just my opinion written down off the top of my head. No spell check or anything so be kind and I hope you get the jist. Any help would be great though. Thanks.
Even if people should only be allowed a say in government (and thus a vote) from age 18, if someone is 16 at the time of a general election, they will be 20/21 the next time they can vote.
So from 18 to 20/21, even though they have a 'right' to a say in our democracy, they cannot do so.
Lowering the voting age reduces this problem, and anyone who disagrees is a nazi! ;^)
I have decided to bring up the political issue of reducing the voting age to 16 in Britain. Before I can begin though I’d like to point out that Britain is still, after decades of politics, NOT even a perfect democracy. Some would argue that the very existence of the Monarchy is against the most basic principles of a democracy itself yet we have one, we know our votes don’t make a vast difference due to the first past the post system, yet we have it and we don’t have referendums to let the voices of the people be heard when desperately needed. Why would the youth of today even want to become interested in the politics of an imperfect democracy that wont even listen to their opinions when Britain is going to war or some other major event is unfolding?
However, humouring the idea that teenagers of the age 16 and up would want to vote. I believe that if we were to allow 16 year olds to vote in the next general election that it would be nothing more than a random pick of the bunch for most part due to the lack of knowledge that many of Scotland's and indeed Britain's youths have about politics. The reason the youth of today aren't concerned about politics is because they don't know enough about it and we aren't engaged enough by it. We are living in a technology driven age when almost anything is available to anyone thanks to the super fast Internet connections, mobile phones and satellite T.V. We can get and be given so many things that we don’t even want in such a short time but politicians have not exploited the advantages of this. Instead of getting e-mails about choosing a political party we get e-mails from friends and newsletters. They are all well and good but I’d just like to highlight the fact that the government is doing nothing to seek us out just hope we'll be drawn to them. Finally, I’d just like to say that I strongly feel that instead of looking to the youth of today to become more politically minded, they should take a step outside and look in at all the petty bickering of these prudes in shirts and try to fix the system of this “democracy” instead.

What do you think?
That'll learn 'em.
we live in cynical times when all politics is mocked, and i suppose it is difficult to get out of the mindset that it isnt a waste of time, that maybe these people actually do something.
what doesnt help is the arguing for arguing's sake that constantly goes on in the house of common's, or the pomp and circumstance that goes on in the house of lord's, the young people of this country have little time for ceremony or anything old fashioned.
most people only take notice on major occassion's like elections and budgets, the rest of the time they don't care, so how do we fix this ?
i say a constant rolling election system, everyone's vote is registered on a computer and you can change it at any time, if a party lost it's majority for over a month it would be replaced, i may not have explained it very well, but it would mean that the government would have to take notice of public opinion.
