I got one of those Medion laptops from Toys R Us for £999, and it's excellent:

P4 2.8GHz (Intel)
512 RAM
40 Gb hard drive (not a lot anymore, but it does)
NVidia 64Mb graphics card
CDRW/DVD

BUT they've replaceed the model now with this:

P4 3.06GHz (Intel)
512 RAM
60 Gb hard drive
NVidia 128Mb graphics
DVD Writer!

For £899.

Never had any trouble with it, XP and everything. I'm sure SR will delete this, so read it while it's hot!

The Main thing between these 2 is upgradabilty, You can get notebooks now that are very high spec and have a battery life of 5 hours with the new centrino one's, they also come with pretty good graphics cards which can play all of the games out at the moment comfortabliy but the price you would pay for one of these notebooks you could get one hell of a top spec pc with all the gubbins like a nice flat screen.

Laptop: -
+ Cool
+ Slim
+ Take it anywhere you want
+ The girls will love you
+ If you can type faster then write, its great for taking notes at college

- Limited upgradability
- Battery life is low
- Can get pretty hot
- You'll need to replace it every few years to keep up with technology

Computer: -
+ Ultimate customisation, if you build your own
+ Upgradable
+ Satisfying to look at
+ Fast
+ Play the latest games

- Can be noisy
- Takes up space

Personally, I'd have both, A laptop for college work/outside of house use and my main machine for everything else.

If only I could afford it.

Laptop
•Has a cool Factor
•Limited in power
•Limited upgrade ability
•Portable
•Generally rubbish for gaming
•Rubbish overclocking options
•Monstrously expensive considering the technology you are getting

PC
•You could build a powerhouse for under a grand
•You could upgrade it again later
•You can buy cheap and overclock to make up the deficit
•Unless you get a shuttle they arent too mobile
•You can customize how it looks
•Whats that you say? 400gb HDD's coming out soon?

Thats off the top of my head, if you want portable and powerful you may want to think of a shuttle.

Really depends on what you want it for. If you want the portability of a laptop then get a laptop. A desktop PC is going to offer more for your money. You could easily build or get a decent gaming PC for under a £1000. Without knowing what your needs are its hard to say which you should get.

Depends really, a PC is easier and cheap to upgrade and the initial cost is lower to buy the thing. The Laptop would be more expensive to buy initially and is harder and more expensive to upgrade, however they hold there value a lot better then a PC does and they are smaller and very easier to move around.
