I've had one. I totally destroyed my arm and elbow years ago. I still have an 8 - 10 inch scar along my arm. The pins managed to rebuild it. It has faded now, but it used to be worse.

I must say, that does sound nasty.
Be brave, Lind - we'll have a surprise waiting when you get back.

No, no, nothing like that.

It is a bit extreme but the tumour is attached to it and the malleus so its gotta go. My balance isnt perfect as it is, so I'm prepared for that.

It is possible to hear without an eardrum, as the bones that conduct hearing are still there, and a graft is going to be put in later on to act as an eardrum.

you mean compound fractures, where the bone break the skin, i never had one despite many broken bones and they look horrendous.
My Injuries
4 Broken foot bones
1 broken ankle
2 broken wrist's, 2 bones each time
i've never heard of anyone having the drum removed, it will massively impact on your balance.

Good for you. Seriously, it really isn't anything worth writing home about. Sure it hurts and all, but it goes away in the end and unless it was a really bad messy break, there will be no signs of it left after a bit.
Getting shot on the other hand, now that comes waaay further up the list of accident and emergency stories. In my experience it also hurts a bit more.

Hang on a minute. They are going to remove your eardrum? How can you hear after that? It sounds just ever so slightly over the top to me.

You don't say.
