I now have my "Javatron" prototype on a recently unlocked Motorola V300 mobile. I hacked, I flashed bios, I downloaded illegal software (in *Russian*), I hacked again, I read instruction from clubmoto ( a spanish website. I don't speak spanish.)

At one point I thought I'd totally corrupted the phones memory, at two more, I thought I'd totally corrupted my PC (with all my I.D.E's, programming files, drivers, flashing utilities and down / upload software) but it WORKS. IT WORKS GODDAMN IT !!!!!!

BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH.

(Eherm. Sorry, its taken me over four hours to do this. The phrase "A steep learning curve" is a poor way to describe the experience)

It's almost better than sex when something *finally* coms together after 3 weeks hard work.

Lots.

People in the office had the fear of asking me for help yesterday.

(part of my job is user support for those that don't know. Don't ever find yourself in it. The only reason I am is because the site is closing soon)

That suited me to a t, as I was left *well* alone. Voted most likely to go on a killing spree? definately............

Probably not a final project. Thats basically what I was wanting to do with mine, but the uni staff demanded research and expansion of original ideas. My final dissertation was entitled "and investigation into dynamic lighting effects for 2d computer gaming applications"

It nearly killed me. Still, it was damn good fun, although amazingly hard work.

Excellent, I didn't know about that. Minter is a true celebrity in gaming circles. He can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned.

Will do. Just got an external library working for floating point number support (mobile java doesn't have it, criminal) so now, I can work out the line towards the player from an enemy, and get them firing.

YEEEEEESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds good to me. I'm very slowly making my way towards an Open University computing degree at the moment: a Java version of a classic shooter would be a nice final project, if they'd let me do something so frivolous.

Do you ever read Way of the Rodent? It's a really cool gaming fanzine and Jeff Minter is writing a multipart history of Llamasoft for it: http://www.wayoftherodent.com/guests/bob_yak2.htm

Hehehe. Get you now. I fully agree. The more "Tempest" clones the better too. I rememeber the last time I played Temnpest 2000 drunk on the pc. I lost half an hour in a state of pure "twitch gaming" induced euphoria. I tranced out fully.

One step at a time. This is my first *ever* j2me game, and I'm still getting the basic engine tweaked (I've just this moment corrected the arena size and boundary checking) for the v300.

Still. The reason I'm doing this is for my own enjoyment and education. I'll have to see where it goes.

As to getting a java enabled phone, I wouldn't recommend it. All the games I've played are crap and have kept me entertained for at the most ten minutes. Mine will be different ;) ;) ;)

Sorry, that was aimed at Blank. Just wanted to educate a poor uneducated soul. The more versions of Robotron the better as far as I'm concerned.

Are you aiming to get a commercial release? I'd like a nice excuse to get a Java phone.

Of course. Llamatron is a version of Robotron, hence my game being called "Javatron". "Smash tv", "Total Carnage", "Llamaboost" (gba freeware version) etc etc. This list goes on.
