Currently we have Playstation, Dreamcast and N64 which are all very realistic and playable, but will by no means match the Playstation 2, Nintendo Dolphin or the X-Box, with many more likely to arrive on the market in the next few years. What I am trying to say is that with DVD and other similar media being introduced into these consoles, will people give up going out all together as they are too intrested and into the very realistic games. You hear of this kind of thing going on when the Internet was introduced, it caused some people to be social outcasts, with these people only wanting to interact with a computer screen than another humans. Will the same thing happen but on a grander scale when the consoles make games so real, you could be living them?
I can't say, but I'm as a console lover myslef, I would hate to see this happen.
The reason people buy games is for a fun form of entertainment, and however good the graphics become, it'll always just be a neat way of killing time. The multiplayer games availably serve to bring friends together, not keep them apart, while time is killed.
The only threat to social lives I see the games industry posing is from net access. This will offer the chance to play games alone and socialise, albeit in an untraditional manner, at one time. And however good beating someone who you can only send text messages to at best may feel, it finds it's place as a compromise between the convenience of cpu controled bots and playing with a pal or two who's expression you can see as you pummel a sound beating into him.
