MAN UNITED 2-1 FULHAM[B]

Ruud van Nistelrooy's double booked Manchester United's place in the FA Cup semi-finals at the expense of Fulham.
Steed Malbranque fired Fulham ahead in the first half from the penalty spot after Wes Brown's rash challenge on Luis Boa Morte.

Van Nistelrooy levelled two minutes later, converting Ryan Giggs's left-wing cross from close range.

The Dutchman struck again in the second half with a typically crisp finish from Cristiano Ronaldo's cross.

It was Van Nistelrooy who had spurned two early opportunities as United eased into the driving seat.

KEY MOMENTS
21 mins: Malbranque penalty puts Fulham 1-0 ahead
23 mins: Van Nistelrooy levels for Man Utd
34 mins: Knight long-range effort hits the bar
62 mins: Van Nistelrooy puts Man Utd ahead

First, his normally sure touch let him down, allowing Zat Knight to sweep across and clear the danger, and the Dutchman was then guilty of a bad miss when he turned on Ronaldo's cross and blasted over from eight yards.

Fulham almost made United pay for that profligacy when Knight climbed highest as Malbranque's free-kick came in to plant a powerful header straight at Tim Howard.

But there was no escape on 21 minutes when United's defensive frailty reared its head again to gift Fulham the lead from the penalty spot.

Brian McBride kept the ball alive as Roy Keane attempted to shepherd the ball out of play and as the American pulled the ball back Wes Brown's rash challenge upended Luis Boa Morte, presenting Malbranque with the chance to ram home his penalty.

It took United just two minutes to draw level, with Gary Neville finding Giggs down the left and his inviting cross was met first-time by Van Nistelrooy.

Knight came close to a spectacular first goal for Fulham on 34 minutes with a dipping shot from fully 30 yards which bounced back off the crossbar.

Malbranque fired Fulham ahead form the penalty spot

United's response sparked a fierce scramble in the Fulham penalty area, with Van Nistelrooy and Giggs having shots charged down.

The chances continued to flow at both ends, with Keane and van Nistelrooy failing by inches to make contact with Giggs' vicious free-kick.

United's defence again failed to cope with a set-piece and in the resulting scramble Sylvain Legwinski's first effort was blocked and when the ball fell to him again he fired straight at Howard from eight yards.

Fulham were opened up four minutes into the second half but Edwin van der Sar got his angles right to deny Giggs.

The Londoners had a let-off on 55 minutes when Volz blocked Darren Fletcher off the ball and Ronaldo smacked the resulting free-kick against the bar.

United stepped up a gear in search of a second goal and found it on 62 minutes with a goal of simple yet deadly construction.

Ronaldo galloped on to a long ball down the right and his cross was met first-time by Van Nistelrooy.

Fulham mounted a late rally and Howard produced a fine save to deny Boa Morte a goal and Fulham boss Chris Coleman a tonic as he watched from his hospital bed.

[B]PORTSMOUTH 1-5 ARSENAL

Arsenal reached the FA Cup semi-finals with an impressive win over Portsmouth.
Jose Antonio Reyes volleyed against the bar early on, before Thierry Henry pounced on a deflection and fired home.

Arsenal added two more in the closing stages of the first-half, as Fredrik Ljungberg curled the ball past Shaka Hislophome and then Kolo Toure struck.

Henry and Ljungberg then each scored a second goal, before Ayegbeni Yakubu and Matthew Taylor rattled the woodwork and Teddy Sheringham's flick found the net.

Despite the slippery conditions, Arsenal quickly began to weave their intricate passing patterns.

Prominent in many of those eye-catching moves was Reyes, who almost gave Arsenal a second-minute lead when he ratteld the crossbar with a wonderful left-footed half-volley.

The young Spaniard then almost got on to the end of Patrick Vieiras' inswinging cross from the right.

Reyes also played a part in Henry's goal as he made a dangerous run into the Portsmouth box.

Petri Pasanen managed to block Ljungberg's pass to Reyes with a sliding tackle, but the ball broke kindly for Henry, who finished with aplomb.

KEY MOMENTS
25 mins: Henry puts ahead
43 mins: Ljungberg extends Arsenal's lead
45 mins: Kolo Toure pops up to triple Arsenal's
50 mins: Henry grabs his second of the match ahead
57 mins: Ljungberg also completes his brace
90 mins:Sheringham knocks the ball past Lehmann

Arsenal continued to open up the Portsmouth almost at will.

Ljungberg and Henry combined with a slick one-two allowing the Frenchman to cut the ball back for Edu, whose low shot was well saved by Hislop.

Vieira also went close, powering a header narrowly wide from a corner.

In the closing stages of the first-half Arsenal emphasised their superiority with two more goals.

First Edu slipped the ball between Pasanen and Linvoy Primus to Ljungberg, who calmly curled the ball past Hislop.

Kolo Toure then capitalised on some slack Portsmouth defending from a corner allowing the Arsenal defender to show low past Hislop.

Arsenal's finishing masterclass contrasted sharply with Portsmouth's lack of confidence in front of goal, notably when Ivica Mornar took too many touches and the danger passed

The second-half was only four minutes old when Henry scored his second with a clever goal that displayed his quick thinking as he sent a low curling shot through a thicket of players to surprise Hislop.

Ljungberg also claimed a second, when his deflected shot gave Hislop no chance.

As Arsenal eased up Yakubu headed against the bar, Taylor hit the post with a low shot and then Sheringham, who had come on as a substitute, flicked the ball .over Jens Lehmann.

I am a die hard Man U fan but I have to say the chances of us now winning the Prem are very slim. But I don't think that Arsenal will do a domestic double or a treble. We will still win the FA cup, not sure 'bout the Champs League, though.

It was an awesome performance by Arsenal last night, yet we still weren't at our absolute best.

Now - and I stress for the ManYoo fans that this is not cockiness or arrogance, because I do remember what happened last season - if we do manage to sustain this level of play, it is difficult to see anyone stopping us from at least attaining another domestic Double. But then it only takes one defeat.

The Treble, however, is one best left to the press to rant about, because I'm not so sure of that.

Like Arsenal themselves, I just take it one game at a time.

Just what I was thinking.

United's best chance of a trophy this season is the FA Cup, but it all depends on the draw in the Champions League. And United only need a 1-0 win in the next European match to go through (Due to the away goals rule); all they need do now is hope that they aren't against a strong foe in the quarters, if they get that far (Which is pretty damn likely).

I didn't mean it. I only wanted the make 'MAN UNITED 2-1 FULHAM' and 'PORTMOUTH 1-5 ARSENAL' bold but it didn't work.
