Matchstick Men > I used to hate cage, I still think his acting is over the top, but I've seen a string of films in which he seemed to redeem himself (most notably the very macabré and dark 'Bringing out the dead'). This is mostly a con-man orientated comedy, with the neurotic cage acting like a loon for the most part. It has a great twist at the end, which you may see coming or may not. Without the twist it would be a mediocre affair, with it, it's pretty good.
Daddy Day Care > I didn't pay any money for this, it was rented by me ma'. Oh Eddie, what the hell happened? The days of coming to america, beverly hills cop, trading places and 48 hours are well and truly gone. He is still funny in parts, but any film relying on kids for the laughs is in trouble from the start. Sentimental cheesy rubbish, I don't know what else I was expecting.
Dreamcatcher > Another stephen king novel comes to the big screen. They should have left the story in print, it may work on paper, it doesn't here. It's just plain stupid, cliched, ridiculous in parts and ultimately boring. For the first 30 mins I would say it is enjoyable - it builds up suspense well, as 4 men are isolated in some alaskan woods, with a storm setting in, strange things start happening. I was hopeful. But about half way through it descends into madness, and even the excellent morgan freeman cannot save it - he is given a terrible role which stifles his talents. tom sizemore is also badly cast here, and seems almost two dimensional. you find you couldn't care less about any of the characters, and when they start dying you almost applaud. the monster effects are akin to something from 'the thing', only jazzed up. considering this is 2004, they aren't that impressive. the ending is almost laughable. avoid
wrong turn > cliched to hell and predictable. if you like gory as hell slasher flicks, you'll like this, but leave your brain at home. the 'enemy' here are mutated west virginia hillbillies(!). it works well for the first half or so of the film, as people are picked off by unseen foes, but then you see them, and they quite frankly look ridiculous - like the orcs out of LOTR. it becomes quite silly after this - you're just waiting patiently for the next horrible over the top death scene, and in some cases you're glad when it happens. "Should I run for the pick up truck, or should I drop to my knees and cry about how I'm going to die?" you get the idea.
hey ma' get off the dang roof.
that's it folks.
Ridley Scott. Nicholas Cage.
Borat needs to watch some films that aren't crap methinks.
