Now, this may sound like a "likely story" but it ain't. No sir.
Anyway, a while ago I bought Medieval Total War. Brilliant game. Then I dropped it.
This caused a minute scratch on the CD's surface and prevented me from installing the game (I had uninstalled it before I dropped it, I am a bit paranoid about space on my PC and Medieval is massive). I got to 47% and then it stopped. Anyway, I tried copying it but no success, normally (I have Roxio) a CD gradually copies, and if it wont the status bar shoots to 100%, which in this case happened. Anyway is there anyway I can copy the CD or more importantly get rid of the damn scratch? I heard there were things that you buy that takes away a very small layer and gets rid of scratches, but this one appears deep. Help appreciated.

I was reading a review in a magazine of a program that can retrieve information from even the most spakked up cd's you could envisage. I cant remember the magazine, but i will have a look when im in town tomorrow.

Perhaps you could email Activision and ask for a replacement?

I bought one of those and the damn thing defected on me after one use. The padded wheel that rolls onto the disc started peeling away after the instructed cleaning process. This resulted in the wretched contraption imprinting padded material into my disc, thus ruining it.

Maybe I was just unlucky though...

You could use Alcohol 120% and Daemon Tools. A120 will try everything it can to read the scratched portion - it's sometimes possible if you have software which knows what it's doing.

I think the abrasive substances are why it works.

It does say it works best with small to medium scratches though.

personally I wouldn't use toothpaste - it may have abrasive substances in it.

I usually give my CD's a wash with warm water, then dry them off with tissue paper, starting in the middle of the CD and rubbing outwards towards the edge.

Do this a few times, and you may get rid of some of the scratch.

that's all I can recommend. you can buy professional CD cleaners, like the one on here :

http://uk.special.reserve.co.uk/ q_GG8253_dvd_doctor_dvddr.html

but they're a tad expensive. Normal CD cleaning kits are a waste of time.

My sister reccommends bicarbonate of soda toothpaste. (No, really, she does.) If that fails then file-sharing is your morally acceptable friend. Don't use it for anything else though, that would be wrong.
