I have heard rumors from reasonably reliable sources within the industry that the STARCUBE thing all spawned from a typo in a memo before a press release from Nintendo's pwers thet be.
According to what I have heard, te machine is intended to be named starTube, refering both to the shape of the console, a short cylinder on it's side with a flattened bottom (instead of being perfectly curved) to give stability, and to the new asymmetrical blah blah blah net connection capacity (I'm not to clear on the technical stuff, I never pay too much attention to specifications etc., just what the thing can actually do) which will give faster net connection data exchange, placing Nintendo at the forefront of internet gaming. Hence 'star' when refering to fiberoptic cables, or 'tubes'.
As I said, this is only a rumour at present, but it would make a lot of sense, and certainly sounds better than starcube.

An interesting thing about the article in which the idea of the new Nintendo console being called the Starcube was formed was that one person from Nintendo said something like,
"the console's name will tell u what it looks like, and what it does."

So is the starcube going to be in the shape of a cube? Maybe it'll be in the shape of a star? I wonder...
