When power-hungry scientist Dr Sebastien Caine and his team of scientists create a serum that can make anything completely invisible, they want to put it to the test straight away. After successfully performing the the experiment on animals such as Gorillas and Dogs, Caine is determined to be the first human ever…to be completely invisible.
After a horrifying scene where Caine endures intense pain to successfully complete the procedure, he is free to do the unthinkable. He is free to do whatever he wants, and whenever he wants, without anyone else knowing. But he never planned to do anything like this, all he wanted to see was whether the serum actually worked. But when his team try to turn him back, they fail to return him to normal, and he is destined to a life of invisibility.
Caine becomes extremely frustrated, and soon becomes a crazed madman who carries out acts of violence and sexual abuse. The movie progresses from there, as we find out whether Caine will ever be turned back to a normal man, with flesh.
The idea is superb, and I really think that this move could’ve been one of the best ever if Verhoeven had used these ideas more creatively. A couple more bad points are the holes in the plot, like when Caine drowns a man for about 10 seconds in the water, then leaves, with the man dead! Surely people can hold their breath for longer than that?
At one point, Caine’s assistant (and ex-girlfriend), completely encovers him with flames and Caine would surely have something like 80% burns, but after a few moments, Caine is up again, and perfectly fine!
But, the good points overweigh the bad points in this movie. The special effects are AWESOME, especially when Caine/the animals are being turned invisible, or being changed back. Also, when Caine is invisible it’s amazing the way they show water/fire/smoke on him, as you can just make out a human body through them!
The acting is very good as well. Kevin Bacon does a superb job portraying Sebastien Caine, and Elizabeth Shue who plays Caine’s ex-girlfriend and one of the team of scientists, also does an excellent job.
There are some nice touches to this movie as well. Some of the quotes, such as, “It’s amazing what you can do when you don’t have to look at yourself in the mirror,” really do make you think. I mean, what would you do, if nobody could see you do it?
Also, there are symbolic bits in this movie, for instance, before Caine is invisible, he catches a fly in his hands and lets it go again. But a few days into being invisible, the same fly comes along, and this time he kills it.
Also, the extra DVD features are brilliant. There’s a documentary called, “Fleshing Out The Hollow Man,”, 3 deleted scenes, feature length commentaries from Kevin Bacon and Paul Verhoeven, Storyboard comparisons, Filmographies and much more.
So, overall I would say this movie had some good ideas, and used some of them well. Also, the special effects were superb, and the acting was good. BUT, there were quite a few holes in the plot, and I think it could’ve been one of the best movies ever if they’d used their ideas better.
