i know that there is a cheat for us ps2's to play region 2 dvd's but is there a way that uk ps2's can play region 1 dvd's?

The short answer is no; you can't play US DVD's (Region 1) on a UK PS2.
I think you're also mistaken about the US PS2's. The only PS2's that can be made to play discs from other regions are the very early Japanese models.
