I read somewhere that you were/had been reading Flowers for Algernon.
What did you think of it?

It was probably ages ago, but I just glanced up at my copy on a shelf the fact that you'd been reading it seemed to pop into my head.

Actually, anyone else read it?

Thought it was rather good indeed. Oh, and don't watch the film version.
Please.
All I'll say, is that it stars Matthew Modine.
Oh God.

It's one of amazons 'sci-fi masterworks', a collection of about 50 books from the past 100 years that are considered true classics by all who have reviewed them. My bookshelf is full of books from that collection, and if you love sci-fi I suggest you have a gander at them at www.amazon.co.uk

Also included in the collection, that I have :

I am Legend, by Richard Matheson
Starmaker, by Olaf Stapledon
Gateway, by Frederik Pohl
The Forever War, by Joe Haldeman
A Scanner Darkly, by Philip K. Dick
Ubik, by Philip K. Dick
The Lathe of Heaven, by Ursula Le Guin
The Fifth Head of Cerberus, by Gene Wolfe
Last and First Men, by Olaf Stapledon

I strongly recommend all of these books, except maybe 'the fifth head of cerberus, which is a little vague and didn't appeal to me so much.

The novels by Olaf Stapledon are truly remarkable - no other books will come close to testing your imagination nearly as much as these do. Philip K. Dick is a genius, he has the ability to bend your mind better than any other author. The rest of those I mentioned are all very good indeed, in particular I am Legend.

When at secondary school we read a short story based upon this book, I shall probably buy this book.

For some reason, I loved it when it first came out. But I saw it again recently, and you're not really missing much.

yeah it was serious, in the lawnmower man a retarded man is given virtual reality therapy to make him super intelligent.

he doesn't then return to being stupid like in FFA but it seems very similar to me.

I really dunno if that's a serious comment or what have you, as I've never actually seen "The Lawnmower Man".

I watched a bit of the film and know what the plot is about.

Do you suppose that 'the lawnmower man' was based on it in a way?
