But firstly I think we should consider the drastic changes that are going to have to occur to achieve this. And what platform will offer the best.
1) Phone Line - A typical house has one phone line. For Internet to occur more phone lines will be needed. Parents and Others do not want the phone constantly tied up.
2) Phone Bills - An expensive phone bill is enough to put anyone off of playing for hours on end.

For the above changes we have to wait for BT to cut costs on installing another line and Cheaper call charges.

3) Games - I think everyone agrees that some of the games in theory sound great but will different machines be able to play together ie. PS2 v DC
4) Hardware v Software - DC are giving away modems but will it have Final Fantasy / Square online. PS2 will have this but will everyone be able to afford a hard-drive / modem after paying £300 for the machine?
As you can see there are many factors to consider and with news of the new two machines (Nuon, and Indrema) there are many yet to come.
Before people start saying DC has Chu Chu Rocket, when I say software might be lacking for DC I mean from a broader perspective (FIFA Online etc.)
What factors are the most crucial? I would say Cost. So come on BT reduce your call charges and lets have a whole country On-line battling it out into the early hours of the morning.
Why don't we just get BT to build an entire new network, for online gaming.
It can be an entirely optical fibre network, so that we can get speeds in excess of a terrabit!
And we want links directly to each of our houses.
And it has to be properly maintained.
And it as to be free.

What I'd really like to see is an online racer. Ridge Racer on the PS2 is rumoured to be playable online, usually it only has 6 cars on the track at a time, do you think they could bring this up to 10 cars considering the extra power at its disposal?
