I was a little biased as I've read the original screnplay, which is much, much darker and nastier. I didn't like Joel Schumacher turning the "bad guys" into Batman baddies.

No, "Se7en" is a perfect example of a colour "Film Noir", "Reservoir Dogs" too. You're entirely correct.
