My computer just froze (which happens to most machines from time to time) so I manually restarted it and came to the main desktop. I tried to open Internet Explorer to come back online, but nothing happened...

I waited a bit and tried again. Nothing.

I then opened word just to check stuff was still working. Word opened.

Then a couple of seconds later everything else I had clicked (explorer windows and messenger) all popped up at once.

Is this a lag with my processor or something? I have just had an AMD 2.6+ installed, so I assume it should be rather fast.

Any ideas whats up with this tart of a machine I am running?

I would get jv16 Power Tools (search in google/download.com). It has load of registry tools, and I find it's the registries acumilation of crap over time that slows your PC up. Use the tools to clean it. Also, I used it to remove the Scan with Norton AntiVirus option on the right click menu which ment it connected to the internet when you right clicked and it always took about 10 secs for the right click menu to apear. Norton should have the option when you install to choose the intergrations, as most are just annying.

Mine is running ok (touch wood) after defragmenting, taking a few unimportant things off the startup files and doing a disk clearup.

Maybe try that out?

Strange, I've been getting this only just recently too; there are a few progrs that run at startup, but where once it was just a 20 second wait while the HD loaded the progs, now there's a minute gap between two program loading at the startup. I'm trying to find the source, but no luck so far.

My processor is also used more frequently now (indicated by the increase in times the fan has spun up/down).

Most instances of lag or stalls involve graphics card drivers. I recommend paradox and tyla to upgrade their graphics card drivers. Otherwise I would advise repairing your Windows installation.

The problem isn't your processor, I'll guarantee you that. It's most likely brain-fade in the operating system, all Windows machines suffer it from time to time. If it only happens occassionally I wouldn't worry about it. If it's happening a lot, you could run a spyware check, else it may be time to reinstall (particularly if your Windows version is pre-2000).

I ahd a similar problem with my work machine (P4 3Ghz 256 Ram (PC100!!) only to find it was a bottle neck between the processor and the Ram causing the problems. Changed it for PC2700 and have had no issues with it since.

On a slightly different note, but still processor related. Playing back audio in WMP have no problems at all whilst doing other tasks, if I try using WA5 ot OpenMG, everytime I type, open new app or load IE it causes the music to stutter or even occasionally stop/crash altogether? Any ideas? (XP2400+ 512 DDR PC3200 (in Dual mode))?
