Is there a USB cable that I can use to connect and transfer files between two PCs (well one a laptop). Very big files so that counts out those USB little harddrives.

You need specialist cables but you'd be better off with a proper network - if you have the associated cards/ports on your computers.
I have one of these http://www.dabs.com /uk/productView.htm?quicklinx=NKV but it is a bit flakey (although that was using win 98), I haven't tried with xp.
