I have the basic Roxio burner and it's never let me down, prefer it over Nero any day.
You wanna make back ups of DVDs and store the files on your hard disk? Ok, get roxio easy DVD creater. I have version 5.2 basic which is ok, but your best bet is to pay a small price of say, 50 quid to the platinum 6.0 version. It comes with a disc copyer, DVD burner, music cd maker and laber system. You would probibly be able to copy th DVD files onto your hard disk as well. (Version 5.2 which is pretty good, comes free with most pc packages)
Copying anything for your own personal use is legal.

To copy files to your harddisk you need to use DVD Decrypter. I dunno about easily copying DVDs though.
