The point (yes there is one, and it surprised me to find out just as much as you) is that while everyone seems so keen to knock sony for not moving the ps2 pad along any further, keeping the old pad, maybe this wasn't such a bad idea. Certainly the pad is a little unwieldy next to some of the other controller designs now, and the d-pad always left a lot to be desired, but when a new or lightwieght gamer is looking at the new console on the shop shelf, an array of buttons so great that you wonder why they don't just use a pc keyboard can be a daunting sight. So, sony keep a design that doesn't take the concept of having buttons on the buttons to fit everything on, but goes with an easy, accessible format, which although lacking in some areas, will make the console so much more attractive, and stop the button adding rot. Smart move fellas.
