‘Lose weight with just one pill’ says one of the many spam emails I receive. All over the papers are adverts for fitness videos and books helping you to get in shape. On one of the lampposts on the way to Uni is a board telling me to phone a number to help me lose weight…

Why do I have to lose weight? Can’t anyone notice the problem that some people need to gain weight?

I’ve got a stupidly high metabolism rate meaning that no matter what I eat I just can’t put on any body-fat. I bet some of you are getting jealous of me now, but I’d gladly swap with you and I can guarantee that soon you’ll be feeling the same way that I do.

The main thing that annoys me is that people just don’t think before they say things, nobody would sit down with someone to talk to them and just randomly comment on how fat someone was, so why do people think that it’s perfectly fine to make these comments to me? Don’t they realise that I find it just as insulting as a ‘fat’ person would; I know if I was to make a comment about someone else’s size they wouldn’t like it one bit and they’d have a go at me.

“You’ve got really skinny wrists,” someone commented to me at dinner once, “No, really skinny, look at them,” she continues… Not being the ‘slimmest’ of girls herself I could have easily made a rude comment back to her but I just sat there, looked at her and said, “Thanks.” I think she got the picture. People make jokes too about it expecting me to laugh along with them, OK, I haven’t had anything really vicious said in a joke but just simple comments like, “You should eat more pies,” are bad enough.

I’m making it sound as if I’m ‘super-skinny’ from this post, I’m not ~that~ bad, after seeing that person on that ‘Brainiac’ programme on Sky One, the bloke who weighed only 6 and a half stone yet allowed himself to be humiliated in the ‘fat versus thin’ ‘experiment’ that they were doing. I’m about 5ft 10 and I weigh just over 9 stone, I don’t know what anyone else weighs but I know 99% of people my age weigh more than me. I suppose I could be far, far worse but this is bad enough for me.

I’m not lazy either; I do play quite a lot of sports. I play tennis and hockey and I’ll play football if anyone’s tempted to risk even witnessing me attempt to play it! (I’m the worst player ever, I’m not joking either!) I had to see a doctor about a year ago because a silly blood test decided that I had hepatitis or something (which I don’t) and he asked me stuff as if I was ‘ill’ from my weight, he probably thought I was anorexic or something…

I’ve been trying to put on weight for ages now. I used to eat a bowl of cereal before I went to bed hoping that the carbohydrates would allow me to put on weight seeing as your metabolism is ‘supposed’ to slow down during the night when you’re asleep. I gave up on that as it wasn’t working, I’m now drinking this milkshake stuff that's meant to be a meal in a drink before I go to bed now hoping that it has the same effect. I’m having a lot of this stuff each night so it’s equivalent to a very large meal but I don’t know how things are progressing as I haven’t got any scales here, it doesn’t seem to be having any effect but that’s just from me looking at myself…

I was considering visiting my GP to see if there was anything that he could recommend but I never got around to it as I thought it was pointless and that there must be someone on the Internet who has an idea about what I can do…
I don’t want anything to just build up muscles, I’m fine with that, I just want something that allows me to fatten up certain areas of my body like my wrists for example, something that will allow me to not appear so skinny and stop people from making comments.

There must be a company that’s focused on the market of people wanting to put on weight, there’s far too many companies dedicated to helping people lose weight, someone ~must~ have noticed that there’s a market for people wanting to put on weight.

Oh, and I’ve just seen the headline in today’s Sun, there couldn’t be anything more ironic could there?!?

Pfft quite your whining, I am too fat and would kill to have a better metabolism although I should really do more sports and so on too. Either way if the first comment you get is the occassional one about having skinny wrists then learn to live with it and eat more junk food. It will eventually make a change. Believe me it's harder to have to watch what you eat than just eat whatever falls in your mouth. I don't mean to sound unsympathetic but yeh I be jealous.

IneedSleep has a point. A lot of people can help it, but it's much easier for them to believe they can't. Much easier to blame something out of their own control than take responsibility for themselves.

If you burn more calories than you take in, you will lose weight. If you eat more calories than you burn, you will put on weight. It's that simple.

How many calories your body burns in a day is obviously important here, but you have complete control over what you eat. You can make a difference if you really try. The people who succeed at dieting or putting on weight aren't the people who are 'lucky'. They're the people who take responsibility for their body and are very disciplined.

Phillip, as for your wanting to put on weight, the first thing you have to do is be determined not to give up.

You mentioned you tried eating cereal before going to bed, and you gave up and started on the milkshakes. How long did you try the cereal before you gave up? Are we talking weeks or months? How much did you eat? A large bowlful (think 150g of the stuff. Go measure that and find out how much it is) with milk will be somewhere over 600 calories, assuming a high fibre cereal.

Have you tried serious food binging? Not just the odd packet of crisps - 30g of food isn't going to make you put on weight - but constant snacking, eating lots of rice and pasta meals (high carb + calorie density), that sort of thing?

One thing you won't get is immediate results. Take it seriously and *really* go for it.

My first question to myself was "are old is he" and I even went to check your profile but you ain't there! Mainly because I wondered if you were overly concerned while you were still expanding (I don't mean to cause offence but there are a lot of people who worry unduly while still young). It may be that in several years time you will be looking back and thinking 'I remember when I was very slim'.

I quickly checked your BMI and you came out just in the underweight section (the way I did it anyway) so at least you are healthy.

I do actually sympathise but at least your clothes don't cram themselves into the back of your wardrobe screaming 'please don't squeeze into me today' like mine did Monday morning!

Sorry but I disagree - a lot of obese people can help it. You only need to do the rounds of the slimming clubs to be amazed at what some people can eat during their waking hours.

I'll admit now that I only read the first bit of your post, Phi11ip, but I agree with the whole 'what about us skinnies?' thing. My metabolism is also very high and no matter what I eat, I can't get over 9/9.5 stone in weight. What I do have has built itself into muscle so there is no fat, but I wouldn't mind being a bit bigger/heavier.

A lot of obese people can't help it - it's not because they eat like pigs, it's because their metabolism is most probably not functioning properly so the weight stays.

It doesn't help the spirits or self confidence of the obese to constantly keep going on about 'Lose weight! It's fappin' great!' either.

I sympathise with you're post, and you make some good points, but I think you're failing to recognise a few things. You're obviously sensative about your apparent skinniness and its not right that people comment on it so flippantly, but the reason they feel that they can do so is because society doesn't shine the same light on underweight people as it does on overweight people. Society puts a greater burden on us fatty types than you skinny boys (for the record, I'm about 5'11" and a shade over 200lbs). Just doing a couple of quick calculations I should be more like 180 lbs, and you should be about 140 rather than 125.

The other point I wanted to make is that whilst there are health risks with being painfully thin (which by the sounds of it, you aren't) there are more risks being overweight, and so there is a greater need for people to lose weight that to gain it.

Just my two cents worth. Everyone has things about them that they would like to be different. Some things are easier to change that others.

: )
