Not every PC comes with it installed either, depends how the OS was installed. This PC didn't.
you need a hotmail address, then you log on to MSN/Windows messenger with that address, and you can send instant messages to anyone else with it set up.
actually the free one you get with windows is 'windows messenger' which is pretty much the same thing.
