Horror films. One of my favorite genres, but I simply can't find anything that truly scares me. Yeah, sure there are films that make you jump, Jaws and Scream are good examples of these, but that's not being scared, that's being surprised.

I need a film that would prevent me from leaving my chair for the fear of what lurked outside my lounge door and I just can't find anything that would do that.

Most of the scariest films I've seen have been older films, from the 60's through to the 80's. They've also been ones that didn't rely on effects as their soul reason for scaring people. Films like Quatermass and it's 60's series were fantastic at the time and their reliance on the fear of the unknown was far superior to any rubber monster suit.

I think this is the problem these days, films are too effects based. There are a few exceptions, such as the Sixth Sense (although this in itself wasn't exactly a scary film) and some films that do work through their effects, try watching Carpenter's The Thing while eating for a visual example of how to lose your lunch. The Exorcist is worthy of a mention as it does have a lot of effects, but relies on a good story too and almost makes the grade for a scary movie (in my own case of course, other people might be cowering behind the sofa at the mere mention of the name!)

Perhaps it's just me and I've had my fear glands removed, at least as far as films are concerned, but I'd like to see a nice old fasioned horror film that thought the story was more important than the effects.

So, Hollywood, show me a good scary movie and I'll happily scream, but I haven't found a good modern one yet.

The only film that has actually scared me in recent times is the classic Hitchcock film - The Birds, and that was made in the 60's!! Modern horror is generally poor, I like the Blair Witch because that actually made you think. Has anyone ever seen Prom Night?? That scared me - the acting was just abysmal!!

FM, I always sleep with one leg out of the bed (and it annoys the hell out of my wife.) so it confuses the aliens that come to abduct me. They can never figure out whether to take the covers as well or try to unhook me from them first.

You should see the anguished look on their faces!

Been swimming off the Great Barrier Reef lately?
Walked through a graveyard at midnight in the last month?
Been outside in the middle of nowhere under a full moon?
Gone to sleep with your leg sticking out of your bed?

All these things I get a little nervous about. I mean, I know there's nothing out there in reality that could really give me a fright (except for the Barrier Reef thing, there's no way you'd catch me doing that).

That's what films have done. When you go to bed tonight (depends what side of the bed you sleep on I suppose if you have your bed against a wall) try to get a good night's sleep by leaving one leg trailing out from under the sheets/duvet, with your foot nearly touching the floor.

Don't you get the feeling ever that something is going to come out from under the bed and take a BIG BITE???!!!!!

:-)
