...at thinking up unique names.

Mozilla Firebird has been renamed Firefox for its 0.8 release to avoid a clash with another open-source project. And this after changing its name to Firebird from Phoenix a while back.

"How annoying: we've got to drop the Phoenix name, someone's already using it."
"How about Firebird?"
"Good idea."
"Should we check that no-one has that name already?"
"Nah, let's just download porn."

Twits. (Loveable twits, of course.)

It's excellent - I've pretty much stopped using Mozilla for the past couple of weeks. The only trouble is that the extension servers are so overloaded that I can't reinstall mouse gestures etc.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/firebird/

"Firebird is a relational database offering many ANSI SQL-92 features that runs on Linux, Windows, and a variety of Unix platforms. Firebird offers excellent concurrency, high performance, and powerful language support for stored procedures and triggers."

Never heard of it myself.

What the hell kind of OS project was it to make firebird change its name? OS projects don't come much bigger.

Interestingly, I had to do a presentation on the open-source movement in computing yesturday.

Still, they always think of rubbish names, "OpenOffice" is just so un-original.

They'll probably forget and then call it Phoenix.

I wonder what they'll call Thunderbird now, seeing as it was named to keep in line with Firewhatever and its ethics.
