Right to save you a lot of time, answer me this first 0 Can I netowrk two computers and share their files between each other by using a ADSL wireless Modem/router/switch (namely the Netgear DG834G)?

Now, if the answer to the above is YES, can you help?

The modem is by my main PC, in my bedroom. I have, connected by cable, the PC, Xbox and PS2. I also have a laptop which I keep downstairs and that is connected wirelessly by a PCMCIA card.

I haven't got a clue about networking and need to know how I can share files between the PC and laptop (it would save a lot of time, writing to CD/DVD etc.).

Can you help? If there is any more info you need, please let me know.

Thanks,
Bullett

The card in the laptop is just acting as an access point. The only way I can access those settings is by dialling into the modem itself. This brings up a website-style GUI for me to change settings etc. So effectively the settings should apply for all computers using it. Right?

WEP encryption is disabled on all fronts (not needed) and both systems are setup to access the network named HOME. The comp can find the laptop but not access it, and the laptop doesn't find anything except the net connection.

Netgear's tutorials are bloody useless and I'm really running out of options.

Thanks a lot for your help guys, I think I may need to get my girlfriends brother to look at it (MCSE qualified). If not, I'd better buy a load of rewritables!

Thanks again - if you have any more ideas, please let me know.

Try enabling it on both the router and the card.

One of the things that happened to me was that my router had its encryption keys listed from 1 through to 5. However the card had them going from 0 through to 4.

Make sure you have the latest drivers.

It shows as 'Automatic', but the then shows 'disabled', so I guess it isn't

OK... Is wireless encryption protocol (WEP) enabled? If so you have to make sure the encryption keys match up.

Mine isn't working either. I tried 'setting up a home network' in the network connections page, but with no luck. all the names were identical, except for the system identifiers (Home, Laptop etc), and I have actually got my PC to find the Laptop in the network box, but I can't access it.

The laptop can't find the PC.

I don't know where I'm going wrong!

In that case you should have no problems. Install the cards and drivers and they should find the router. Easy as that.

Although mine never worked like that....
