It's been in the works for sometime but even so this appears to have come when people were least expecting it.

If they market it right this could seriously throw a spanner into the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray format war. Especially if the titles are significantly cheaper due to the savings on distribution and packaging.

They envisioned doing away with on-disc media and software and with this and Live Arcade they've taken some pretty big steps towards accomplishing that goal.

Expect bigger harddrives to be in the works. :D

The movies are rentals, the TV shows you can keep as long as you want.

You can only keep them for 24 hours after watching, up to two weeks.

Bigger Hard Drives had better be on the way - it's amazing how fast you can fill a 20Gb one...

I was going to say that Broadband connections would need to be faster for downloading movies (5 gig or more for HD), but then you can also buffer them and watch them as they are downloading.

I thought the PS3 was doing a very similar thing though and they were planning to have a recordable Blu-Ray drive in the future to replace the current PS3 one?
