I thought anything over 137Gb needed to be SCSI or SATA?

I build a system with a 300gb hard drive in an eide format, no problem

He of course is correct, There is a problem with the operating seeing over 120gb but this is due there not being any 48 bit addressing which is fixable with an update form microsoft.

Nope. Some motherboards don't support more than 137GB, and perhaps there was a technical hurdle to cross that I'm not aware of, but >137GB drives are commonplace.
