Gus Van Sant's new movie. I saw the trailer a few weeks ago and thought it looked intriguing, but I went and watched the whole film tonight and it was fantastic. If you've seen the ads or reviews then you'll know it's about a Columbine-style high school massacre - but it's mostly not about that at all and just chronicles a couple of school day hours for a bunch of variously unhappy teens. I loved the direction: long, long scenes following the characters about the school - sort of like the Donnie Darko set piece, but more natural and prolonged; and at times the action seems to intrude on the camera rather than the other way around. Sound is really important in this film, dipping almost to the inaudible at times and then reaching a restrained crescendo when the action needs it - really hits the whole 'crowded room/so alone' thing on the head - and underpinned by a slightly menacing piano motif that is probably a famous classical piece.
The narrative weaves back and forth through time and you see the same things happen from several different points of view, and the story gradually gathers this creepy, multi-layered momentum that you can do nothing to stop - even if you wanted to. And much as I deplore massacring high school students, I had a bit of a moral dilemna towards the end of the film too: if you see it you'll know why.
Go and see this film, it is seriously good. I've seen three great movies recently - American Splendor, Lost In Translation (I liked it, so ha!) and this - and Elephant was the best of the lot.
WHAT! I was never informed on this.
Gonna watch it
> Fur Elise?!
That's the one. Thanks. I like Beethoven now - must be getting old.
*sigh*
