if you take one time from another how dou show wether it is earl or late I.E

=IF(B1>A1,B1-A1,A1-B1)

09:00 08:45 00:15
10:00 10:15 00:15

They both sow a 15 min difference but one is early and one is late..........how do i change the if statement to to show a + or a -

I believe this is what your after

=IF((A1>=B1),"-","+")& TEXT(IF(A1>= B1,A1-B1,B1-A1),"hh:mm")

The only problem is that it has now become a text string and you cannot do any further calculations on the result.

Well you could title the columns ...... that's what they're there for.

even putting the answer in two cols still does not solve it as you still dont know wether its early or late...........more brain strain here i think. thanks to all........nice site....nice people

I think that your problem is your trying to show time in a negative manner, this isn't possible in excel although I can appreciate why you'd want to do it.

I think you'll have to have two columns, one for the positive time and one for the negative time. Both columns / cells will show up as positive numbers but you can subtract one from the other.
