"Down and out in the magic Kingdom" and "Eastern Standard Tribes"

http://craphound.com/down/

Down and out has got good reviews from Amazon, so it might be worth a look.

Got my copies. I need something free to read (skint)

Interesting. Might have a read of these once I've worked my way through the breezeblock tome I'm ploughing (happily) through. I don't like reading on the computer so I might have to abuse my office printer privileges.

I'm currently reading 'Gateway' by Frederik Pohl.

Just thought I'd share that snippet of information with you.

"The Cold Six Thousand" by James Ellroy for me.

It’s a damn bloody difficult read though.
Seems ok with the little bit I’ve posted, but imagine the staccato prose, page after page after page.

Still, It’s extremely entertaining.

"They sent him to Dallas to kill a n***** pimp named Wendell Durfee. He wasn't sure he could do it.
The Casino Operators Council flew him. They supplied first-class fare. They tapped their slush fund. They greased him. They fed him six cold.
Nobody said it:
Kill that c***. Do it good. Take our hit fee.
The flight ran smooth. A stew served drinks. She saw his gun. She played up. She asked dumb questions.
He said he worked Vegas PD. He ran the intel squad. He built files and logged information.
She loved it. She swooned.
"Hon, what you doin' in Dallas?"
He told her.
A Negro shivved a twenty-one dealer. The dealer lost an eye. The Negro booked to Big D. She loved it. She brought him highballs. He omitted details.
The dealer provoked the attack. The council issued the contract-death for ADW Two.
The preflight pep talk. Lieutenant Buddy Fritsch:
"I don't have to tell you what we expect, son. And I don't have to add that your father expects it, too."
The stew played geisha girl. The stew fluffed her beehive.
"What's your name?"
"Wayne Tedrow."
She whooped. "You just have to be Junior!"
He looked through her. He doodled. He yawned."

I started reading that a while ago but gave up. I loved his other books, especially the series with LA Confidential in it, but never got into that one. He just seemed to take that whole staccato prose thing to the extreme. I was ill when I read it though, so I might give it another go.

I'm currently reading Quicksilver by Neal Stephenson, and have been since Christmas. I read quickly normally and it's a really good book so I don't know what's happened to me. Maybe my brain has been addled by booze.

Sounds pretty good. I have a big list of books to get when I've got a few spare quid lying around.

Any good? I just ordered a couple of those SF Masterworks things off Amazon. I don't normally like sci-fi but I read Hyperion by Dan Simmons recently and really loved it, so I thought I'd give some others a go.

The author Of "Snow Crash?"
I've read the aforementioned title (an excellent book), but never "Quicksilver."

This is the sequel / predecessor to Cryptonomicon? I've heard both of these are a really difficult and dry read.

"The Diamond Age" is a good read though.

Yep, him.

I really liked Cryptonomicon - it's less genre-ish than Snow Crash but I thought it was excellent. Quicksilver is set in the 17th Century and stars various real life scientists like Newton, as well as a load of kings and vagabonds: I'm about three-quarters of the way through and still not sure what it's all about. It's 900 pages long and only the first book of a trilogy that's all being released this year. The reviews on amazon are really mixed, especially from people who loved his early stuff, but I've been enjoying it. I'd probably reccommend Cryptonomicon first though.

The Diamond Age is my favourite book of his. I've read it a couple of times, and I never do that anymore.
