Is there any chance the games indistry could go the way of the music industry? Ruled by those with the money, with the big PR companies - yet with little innovation, and the real 'talent' as it were, not doing so well.

Already we see Fifa and Tomb raider games continually topping the charts, no matter how dire and repetivitve they are.
(Just like westlife or hearsay)

Music critics are always complaining at this (as am I). Perhaps the future could involve games critics praising some original titles down a little in the charts, sharing the opinions of the more dedicated (rather than 'casual') fans.

Well I won't elaborate further, you all know what I'm talking about. There are plenty of parallels to draw upon. So, is it likely to happen?

It's a capitalist society, involving an industry attempting to appeal to a mass audience - so yes, it's inevitable. A problem with our society perhaps? An annoying side-effect of capitalism?

How good does a game need to be to sell nowadays?

Somebody convince me this won't happen. Please.

Games like FIFA, Millionaire, Tomb Raider and such top the retail charts purely and simply because people buy them (I buy the Tomb Raider series for example, knowing that although they aren't the best games around, I happen to enjoy the gameplay, that's just my personal quirk, though).

There are many FIFA fans who collect the FIFA series, and Millionaire has a mass market appeal for many of the public, so that's how they sell so well.

Regardless of the fact that there is much better to be had out there, but then not all gamers in the mainstream have the discerning tastes and critical eye for perfection that we here on the forums have.

WWTBAM only got to the top of the charts because people could relate to it. I have played it. Once. It was rubbish. Some consoles developers seem to be going for sequels, the Tomb Raider and FIFA thing has been mentioned already. But what about sequels generally?
What do people think of them, i know some people who want buy a sequel full stop, even if the game is better than its predecessor in more apsects than just graphics. Im not sure where i stand on this, becuase sequels wont really bring too much new stuff to the game, sure some aspects will change, but not much. Should we stop buying sequels all together, so developers know they have to think up new stuff? Its a difficult one.

Not very good by the looks of things - I still cant believe that Who Wants to be a Millionaire was top of the charts for a record 18 weeks - Ive never played it so I cant judge it myself but just about every review I have read on it gave it no higher than 60% - So why did it sell so well??
Sequels have been confirmed by the way for next gen consoles - will we get to see the audience now with an animated Chris Tarrant??
