My father is a university lecturer and as such he deals with a lot of video tapes. So he decided to switch to DVDs. He just bought a DVD+R/RW standalone that works fine, but his laptop (not the latest of models) dvd drive can't play them. How would I solve this problem for him? I'm not completely sure if he needs a new dvd drive or just software. Or perhaps an extrenal dvd drive. Any ideas?

Try looking for a firmware update for the laptop's dvd drive. Only update it if it definitely cures that problem as it is possible to muck up the drive.

If the drive is quite old it wound be able to play the new DVD formats (DVD+ and DVD-). Depending on the laptop he may need a new Internal drive (around £70-£100), but with may laptops this is not possible due to there intergrated design. In that situation you will need to perchase a external DVD drive (around £100-£200)

I've found an internal one http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?TEA-DV28E that my work, but you will have to investigate this, and an externall one (which requires USB 2)

You may also want to check ebuyer.co.uk

Hope this helps
