Bursting on the screen in 1984 “The Terminator” was the main launching film of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s career he later reprised his role in 1991 for the sequel, both are spectacular films but which is the best.
Brief outline of “The Terminator”
The Terminator starts the sci-fi story off with two men being sent back in time from the future only one of these men is here to protect Sarah Connor (Hamilton) and the other, who turns out to be a cyborg, is here to kill her. It is a gripping story with a deadly pursuit taking place with both men from the future trying to track her down first. If the Terminator finds her first she’s dead and if Reese finds her then he will have to protect her from the killing machine. Fortunately he finds her first but only just and the story of man v machine begins as Arnie begins he relentless task of trying to kill her. As Reese says “He will not stop at anything”.
The reason we are told for this action is that Connor will have a son who destroys the army of computers who have taken over the world, in this future holocaust the robots manage to send back a Terminator to kill the mother of John Connor before she gives birth to the saviour of the human race, learning of this John Connor sends back Reese to protect her from this machine.
At one stage not sure of whom to believe Sarah goes to the police for protection but the whole police station are unable to protect her from the awesome power of Arnie as he coolly executes everyone in the station in his search for Connor. Reese again manages to get her to safety from the pursuing Terminator and they lose him for a short while.
In a further twist to the story Reese turns out to be John’s father after getting Sarah pregnant in a moment away from the Terminator.
Having armed themselves with whatever they could get hold of they prepare for the final onslaught from the cyborg. A great chase follows with a lorry that ends up in a ball of flames, thinking they have defeated the cyborg, its endoskeleton rises from the flames still on its pursuit to take the life of Sarah Connor. Its lights are finally put out when it is crushed in a pressing machine; it is not the only one to die, as Reese is also a casualty.
Brief Outline – Terminator 2.
The sequel starts in a similar style with two men being sent back from the future but in a nice twist Arnie is sent back to protect the now teenage John Connor and a different Terminator is sent back to kill him.
Arnie is the older model Terminator as in the first film where as Patrick is the new T1000 that can change shape and is made of what looks like molten metal.
Again it is a chase to find John Connor first and an exciting scene in shopping mall results in Arnie just managing to get to him before the other one does.
Believing Arnie John goes to protect his mother from the other Terminator. Sarah is now held in a mental institute, as no one believed her story from 1984. John and Arnie manage to break her out just before the other Terminator gets there.
We are then told of how Arnie came to be able to help John rather than try to kill him as he was reprogrammed in the future. After taking a little while to come to terms with Arnie being on her side Sarah decides to end the saga once and for all by killing Dyson, the brains behind Skynet – the computer system which eventually gives life to the robots.
After an impressive scene where Arnie convinces Dyson he is a cyborg by removing his outer skin on his arm they all decide to blow up the factory where the work is taking place. Just as they have completed it the other Terminator turns up and pursues them to a Steel factory where the climax is held.
Similarly to the first one the story looks over as the T1000 is frozen by liquid nitrogen but the heat from the molten steel melts the frozen terminator. An almighty fight between Arnie and the T1000 takes place with the newer model winning.
Just as the T1000 is about to win after tricking John by pretending to be his mother Arnie finds some reserve power and manages to shoot the T1000 splitting his body apart. The force from the blow pushes the T1000 over the edge into the molten steel below where he dies. Finally to remove all trace of the Terminators Arnie also lowers himself into the steel as he himself is terminated.
On their own they are great films but together they form an excellent pair. The Terminator is a rougher film made on a lower budget. Even though the budget was lower it is still full of excellent stunts and special effects e.g. the rising of the metal skeleton from the flames of the tanker is still one of the best scenes in film history. Then there is the gory part where he takes out his eye with a scalpel and then repairs his arm.
However T2 beats it on the effect front with some groundbreaking scenes. The list is endless, the part where T1000 walks out from the flames after the truck has blown up, the part where the he has camouflaged himself as the floor and rises into the form of the cop, every time he gets shot, the bit where he jumps into the helicopter, the bit when he is frozen and explodes when shot etc… It is hard t o imagine that these effects are 10 years old as they have hardly been bettered
But it is not just sfx which make a film the story is also important. In the first one the story is set and is a bit simpler with the Terminator just hunting down Sarah Connor. However the story is very interesting and is a reason that sets it apart from other Sci-fi pursuit films. It is a thought provoking film as it makes you ask yourself what happens if he kills Sarah. It is an interesting concept and a good slant on the story of interfering with the past and the future. Terminator 2 advances on this idea and progresses the story. The progression is an excellent evolvement from the original and is not just a lame remake. Although the story is similar there are great twists in the plot most notably Arnie being on the good side.
The acting in both films is fine. Its not Oscar winning standard but it is good. Arnie was born to play a Terminator and Michael Biehn in the first one is excellent. Even Edward Furlong wasn’t too annoying as the teenager.
The success of both films owes a lot to the director of both films, James Cameron. He has proven he can direct the big films and his handling of the two is perfect. They are both set at breakneck speed that the films are entertaining throughout.
In my opinion they are both excellent. I remember walking out of the cinema having watched T2 and thinking it was the best film ever, maybe that was a little too much praise but for the time the effects were and still are truly amazing. There is the right mix of violence, comedy and seriousness to the films and they are made from a well thought out story.
Throughout the last ten years I have questioned which is better and have repeatedly changed my mind, even now I am not too sure but today I think that the first one for its tense atmosphere throughout and the sheer terror that Arnie manages to provide makes it the winner. When he ransacks the police station that is brilliant and of course immortalised his line “I’ll be back!”
But I’m sure you’ll disagree and say that T2 is better and probably next week I’ll agree with you.
Bare with me, this is a tough one to explain and understand:
In the first movie, the Terminator was sent back through time to destroy Sarah Connor before the birth of her son, the leader of the Human Resistance. This Terminator was destroyed in the factory, and the bits of it strewn all over the place...
In the second movie, we learn that the chip, which controls the Terminator, was designed by CyberDyne Systems, based on research from the chip, found in the wrecked Arnie...
So, in other words, where did the Terminator come from?
It was invented and sent back through time, where it was used as a model for its own creation...
It actually invented itself....
And this makes me wonder...
If time travel will ever be a possibility, why don't we travel back to 1999 and give the plans for the timemachine to ourselves? We could invent a timemachine, without even thinking about it...
But with this in mind, the timemachine has NOT been invented and will never be... Time travel is impossible... Because if a timemachine could invent itself this way, it would already have done so... !!!
Told you, this was a tough one !!!
---I think too much, therefore I am.... too much---
The main differences between the two movies is that The Terminator has less impressive special effects compared to Terminator 2, but this is mainly due to the fact that The Terminator was made earlier. Also the first film is alot darker, whereas Terminator 2 has a comedic element in it!
Personally I have a VHS collection with both films on one tape so I dont have to choose. Im not sure if the collection has been released on DVD yet though, but both films are definately worth watching.
