I have, in the past, been quite vocal in my unhappiness with the PS2 and the inability to release games even half-way decent some 4 months after the console launch.
There was a dry spell waaay after Nov 24th, with all of us purchasing the same 3 titles and glancing wistfully at the magazines to things shimmering in the distant future.
But, it would appear, that this is being rectified. In the past 2/3 weeks we have had a glut of titles, and more surprisingly, these titles have not been shoddy product that will sell due to lack of anything else.
My tension was relieved by the release of Knockout Kings 2001, and more swiftly followed. We now have Z.O.E, Armour Core 2, Star Wars Starfighter, Moto GP and many others that I cannot think of right now, with serious titles lined up for the next month or so.
We all knew that the PS2 would have limited titles at 1st, and we waited.
And waited. And waited. And bought DVDs and held up MGS2 and said “See? Do you see? I don’t mind because….” Whilst doubters turned their backs and made hand gestures.
Well now I think that we PS2 people no longer should admit from the sides of our mouths that “Well yeah, but it plays a nice DVD and the cheapest one of those is £150, so I didn’t blow my money really..”
No more do we need to meet in darkened store rooms and admit to each other that we bought one, there is no more mocking in the streets by those without.
I say stand up and be proud to own the next generation of home entertainment!
Don’t stay in that closet, if someone looks at you in “that way”, stand your ground, whip out your MGS2 demo and prove to them that your choice does not make you a lesser class person.
So brothers and sisters, play Z.O.E and rejoice.
Pop in Star Wars Starfighter and relive those childhood dreams.
But, most important of all, do not stand in the shadows and wait for someone that looks like they might be the same as you.
Take to daylight, be proud and say it loud “PS2, I’m not ashamed anymore. I’m here to stay and if you don’t like it, learn to deal with it.”
There is an alarming trend towards imposing time limits on playable PS1 and PS2 demos at the moment. The GT3 demo was limited to 150 seconds plus the replay before forcing you to reset; I have two versions of the FIFA2001 demo, and both of them only allow you one half of the match (about 3 minutes) before quitting and forcing you to reload.
I have to say that, enjoyable as they were, I resent time-limited demos. I've heard people say before that it's to make sure you buy the full game when it's available, but IMHO that's bull. A demo is a small section of the game, and if you enjoy it, you'll buy the full version; even with something as re-playable as the MGS2 demo, there just isn't enough in there to prevent you getting the full game.
Similarly, with GT3, three cars and two tracks is not enough to keep you entertained and prevent you buying the full version; and FIFA only gives you two teams, so would it really matter if you could play a full game over and over? At least you should get one full game before it resets.
The MGS2 demo provided with ZOE is a blessing simply because you don't have to reset after five minutes; the fact that the game is truly amazing is irrelevant!
:-)
I would much rather have free demos with magazines than with full games.
Yes but the demos in Mags are very dodgy, you get some good ones but never as good as Game packaged Demos!
NEVER!

May I say that ZOE is an awesome game, and MGS2 was just a bonus. I would definitely of got ZOE, even if it wasn't coming with the demo! The demo is just a lovely, lovely bonus.
I agree that it has been done before, when i bought PSO the was a demo of Sonic 2 with it. I just dont it to become a habbit for developers to do this, i would much rather have free demos with magazines than with full games.
SPANK SPANK SPANK SPANK
Lovely Primate Pounding.
Johnny Morris ain't got nothing on me.
Christ, it's starting again...breath deep Goaty...don't think about the monkey...

No, I bought ZOE because I wanted ZOE. MGS2 was just a heck of a bonus! Though to be honest, I probably *would* have paid for the demo if they'd sold it seperately.
Thankfully Konami were decent enough not to do that, though. And they can't be accused of packaging the demo with ZOE just to sell the game (not that you were accusing them), because it has been done before, and will be again.
On PS1 there was a demo of Silent Hill with MGS1; in Japan at least, there'll be a demo of Devil May Cry with Resident Evil: Code Veronica.
In answer to Goatboy's original post... I always have been proud of my PS2, and I've never been ashamed to say so, as many of the regulars will testify!
For me, it has always been sound investment. I've never defended it because I felt I needed to justify my £300; I've defended it because I've always believed that it's a damn fine machine.
Launch games weren't astounding, but there were enough that I wanted to play; I bought 4 with the console. I've always said that it will sell, and that things will improve. There are at least 10-15 games due this year that are essential purchases for me personally, and more appear in the mags each month.
Basically, faulty units aside, the only reason I can see for anyone *not* being happy with a PS2 is if they really don't want any of the games due out for it. Even then, that person shouldn't be unhappy with the machine - they should be unhappy with themselves, because they obviously bought the wrong console! PS2 isn't for everyone, but then no console is; that's why there's a healthily competitive market.
The hoof-proof controller makes all things good.
The Goaty official PS2 accessories are a god-send, no more will Ungulates like myself stare in envy and then wander off to butt gates and look stupid.
And Black and White....now then...did I tell you about how much fun I'll have with my monkey?...
You see....
