...The FA says "How High??".

Typical, isn't it! Respected managers (including Arséne Wenger) have been whinging-on for years, now, about the "need" for a mid-season Winter Break; yet, with every attempt and plea they've made to get such a system in-motion, the FA have simply turned their backs and said 'No!'.

But now, things are different. You see, this isn't just ``anyone´´ asking for a Break, this time - it's Sven-Goran Eriksson; the England manager who has made "such a difference" to our team since he took over!

Whatever "Sven" says must-go.

"If HE wants a Winter Break - even though the Premier League has sod-all to do with him, really - then, we MUST implement one, ASAP!!"

I mean, who is he to say what-should-be-what in our domestic CLUB competitions?!? He's the international manager - shouldn't he be worrying about our preparations for Euro 2004, in 5-months-time??

What happans in the league should be none of his business! Sure, it may tire players having to go non-stop for 10-months, but taking-out even just 2-weeks from the middle of the season is only gonna make things worse with the inevitable - and ever-tiring! - fixture pile-ups, only one-month before whatever any international summer tournaments.

He may be stupidly idolised by million just for making David Beckham captain [again: we're hardly any better than we were under Keegan or Hoddle!], and just because "we're the only European country that doesn't do it - we must follow-suit"... And it's done!

If players want time-off, they'd have asked for it through their PFA Representatives! What good will Christmas be next year with out a double-header of Live football on SkySports around Boxing Day???

Example #3,406 of the FA's incompetence to both DO what's right for the game and THINK for themselves (for a change).

Doesnt do much for Spain(38 games in liga), the winter break, they do on par with England in most international comps. But you look at Italy, who have a a winter break too, do really well in the international comps. Surely its down to them having a much smaller League.

Not if they extend the season by 2 weeks. Besides, many other countries have a winter break, and it doesn't do them any harm in the tournaments. Most of them do better than England!

I'd rather the players be fitter for club than country, anyway. Clubs, after all, pay the wages. (Even as a Gooner, I had a lot of sympathy for Spurs recently when Kanoute upped and left them while they were trying to get out of the relegation zone.)

Besides, as patriotic as I am, it's not like England are ever likely to win a football competition. Not in my lifetime, anyway.

Well, my mum will be happier for a start!

Seriously though - I'm happy to be corrected, but I thought I read that they were planning the break for January so that it didn't interfere with what they thought was a British "tradition" of footy on Boxing Day?
