But really, wouldn't all of these teams have benefitted from having another experienced centre-back in their squad?
Manchester United's back four without Rio will likely be Neville, Brown, Silvestre and O'Shea. At least the full backs have experience in the centre, and there's Phil Neville or Quinten Fortune to move to a full back position if necessary, but still, I'd rather have a more experienced man in the centre, given Brown's track record with injuries, you can't gaurentee he'll be fit for the rest of the season. People say Keane will fill in at the back, but he's not playing every game this season, and would be more effective in the centre anyway.
When Chelsea left out John Terry against Watford in the cup, they were awful. Now they face the prospect of three weeks without him after he ran into another player during training (or something). Given that they've got money coming out of their ears (it's a popular place to keep it in Rusia, they don't trust the banks) you would have thought they would have added another centre back? They're going to need to replace Desailly t some point anyway, and who else do they have, Gallas, any others? Cou7ld really do with more at the back?
Arsenal certainly suffered from a lack of defenders at the tail end of last season. Sol Cambell is good, and Toure has done well this season, but with Keown aging, and Cygan worrying, I can't help but think that some of the transer fee for Reyes would have been better spent at the back? Especially as it's being said that the transfer money for Reyes will mean that no one comes in this sumemr either.
There's a few days to go yet before the window closes, but there aren't even any rumours about these teams stregthening at the back. What do you think, do they need to? Or are they thinking about doing it the Real Madrid way, spend heavily on the front and midfield, and have a defence that can cope, but nothing too expensive...?
Wes brown is crap- injuries to him are a blessing as they hide how crap he really is.
Man utds defence with rio is perfectly good and doesn't really need much attention
neville-ferdinand-silvestre-o'shea
pesonally i'd rather o'shea and silvestre were swapped round. or better still, phill neville dropped, or forced to left back and o'shea tried in the keane role. They do need a cover but a loan signing probably would have been enough, can't really see why they didn't follow up their interest in van buyten though.
Good keeps, pretty good defence, good forwards, decaying mid.
Arsenals defence needs a complete overhaul.
Lauren, toure (i don't care what pro-arsene people say he's still dodgy) and cygan, are only just worty of playing for my village team. (no i don't live next door to the bernabeu!)
Campbell and cole should be kept on, lehman is good until an improvement can be found but it is by no means a priority.
Arsenal are awesome in mid and up front
I won't comment on the general structure of the chelsea team as it could and will be said to be highly biased.
Yet central defenders are not a priority as yet terry-Gallas is awesome. Can't complain at having desailly as back up and Huth is one of the most promising young centrebacks around. In the summer i'd like a new strong centre back preferably young, and preferably christian chivu, and would in all honesty like to see desailly go.
and yes that was in brief
At least Saha has started well, and we've won the last two games, but I prefered it earlier this season when we were keeping clean sheets!
What really gets to me, though, is to see another player Fergie has previously shown an interest in, quite simply, "free" to join another Premiership club - and, our rivals, at that, too.
It's not the first-time it's happened, either.
When we really need that kind of player, Fergie just seems to "stall" for some reason, and we miss-out on another player who, potentialy, could've made a difference.
We've also missed out on Frank de Boer, who's just signed for Rangers. He may be getting-on a bit, but he's still a top-quality centre-back - and one with the kind of experience we could've done with, in the absence of Rio Ferdinand. If only for one-season... The price was certainly right!
Are the boardroom really running things or what??
Somehow, I don't think this lack-of-signings is really all down to Ferguson, given the amount of interest he has previously shown in players.
our (arsenal's) back four have undoubtably changed the most over the years. blow the hands up, screw the flat back four, ignore the experience; todays premiership demands wing backs, tall pacy centre backs and the ability to cover for when other defenders attack. to prove my point, look at the top 3. the arsenal back four wouldnt work now because they were slow and held a high line.
big money just isnt spent on defenders. you have four of them- spread the money, grow them from young, when they're cheap. name some high buys of defenders except for ferdinand and nesta.
arsenal, man u, chelsea, they all have enough at the back. (atleast) one lead role, one left footed, one pacy, one tall.
puyol for 10 sounds cheap, but barca need money...

> man to replace Rio :/
That was obvious after the Villa game. Brown is the english Blanc. If we manage to win the title now it'll be a miracle with him at the back.
The defence today was shambles.
> Clichy...
What?
