The Office Season 1 & 2

I recently found myself in HMV and spotted this boxset for only £8, i had never seen more than 10 minutes of the odd episode but i have seen all of Ricky Gervais stand up and think he is brilliant. With £8 at stake i didn’t think twice about buying it and to be honest, after watching both series in 4 days i would happily of paid £20.

The Office is a mockumentary, which for those who are unaware of the term, means it is presented like a documentary but it fictional. Set in Slough at a paper office/factory we meet the staff members who keep the place ticking and what they get up to. From the very first episode the tone is set and the level of comedy, David Brent (played excellently by Ricky Gervais) is the office manager and likes to be everyone’s friend. He sees himself as a funny person who everyone likes, thinks he knows more about most subjects than everyone else and hates to be criticised. I think it is pretty safe to say that we all know someone a little bit like Brent! While he is constantly trying to be an entertainer to the workers he often appears to neglect his work and finds himself with the regional managers and in trouble. Even when being told what to do he is often quick to talk back and try come off as the better person (rarely does this happen).

I am sure plenty of you have seen the Office and know what Brent is about, while he offers great humour, a lot of it stems from that cringe factor and i constantly found myself laughing after he had said something you would never imagine saying out loud. With Brent being the main focus there is an ongoing will he, won’t he situation with the receptionist Dawn (who has a fiancée) and Tim who works as a sales rep. They are always flirting and messing about but it always seems to break down before it gets anyway. Tim is the under achiever we all want to win, especially with Dawn’s fiancée being an obnoxious factory worker who does not treat her well. The other character who has more focus than others is Gareth, who is s team leader in the Office and due to being in the Territorial Army, thinks he is in a much higher position than he is and is constantly trying to be Brent’s second in command. More of the humour in the show stems from Tim constantly out witting Gareth and making him look stupid by tricking him and coaxing him into saying the wrong thing.

The 2 series go over the highs and lows of the work place, including redundancy and people getting promoted. Some aspects you might find similar to places you have worked before but it is very over the top (and constantly funny). I was so pleased to have the 1st and 2nd series as i could not put it down, not due to gripping story lines but because the humour is much to my taste and Gervais constantly had me laughing out loud or grinning until my cheeks hurt. Brent has a thousand different ways to make you smiles or wince but it constantly keeps you entertained and for anyone who missed this great programme on TV like i did, then the opportunity to pick it up at £8 should not be missed, the only let down is the Christmas Special is not included, and it is something you will want to pick up aswell (set 2 years later and has some big events that really round things up)

For some people it can get repetitive and there is little depth in the story, but if you are looking for a simple comedy series to keep you laughing this is it. Not to everyone’s taste but Gervais fans will be in their element.

Go buy this now, it will be the best £8 you spend!
