Entertaining enough (if unoriginal) up until Katsumoto and Algen were the *only* survivors of the Gatling gun barrage, at which point I gave up on it thinking, "Oh, come ON!"
Ken Watanabe as Katsumoto did a fantastic job however, and Cruise was solid. A well shot, well directed and brilliantly acted movie, let down by a paint by numbers screenplay, which in points was obviously an Oscar grab attempt.

Direction wise, it showed a large expanse of the field while they were getting up, and no-one else was alive. Its the "heros battle exemption" syndrome. A lesser character will die of a single bullet / arrow wound, while the heros or main characters will take at least 4 times that many. Lazy writing IMHO.

The fighting was brutal, and very well done. I enjoyed it, don't get me wrong, but I thought it was "Dances With Sake" basically, and was therefore disappointed with it a little.
Still, it was better than half the c'ap currently on.
I enjoyed the film, anyway.

I really liked this film, thought it was one of the best films I'd seen for ages. The fight scenes are excellent, but it's not completely shallow, which is cool.
