I was walking along the other day and was hunting for films to watch as i so often do, seeing this and The Transporter 2 in a £5 bundle i thought i would pick it up and give it a try. Jason Statham normally provides watchable films and i had heard average reviews about this trilogy. I will be reviewing the second instalment in a while and will make the comparisons in that.
The Film starts in an underground car park, set in France, where Statham is sorting a few bits and pieces out, then he drives off to a bank where 4 masked men jump in who have just robbed the bank, in what can only be described as a dodgey accent, the group are told that the agreement was 3 men of a certain weight. How the calculations had been made to get away etc etc so after some arguing one man gets shot and left while the rest are in a high speed get away from the Police. This initial car scene i really enjoyed, it was filmed well and there was enough going on with obstacles and crashes to keep it interesting for the short duration it is on. The final part of the escape is very far fetched but the rest of the film follows in this suit and i would suggest if you like down to earth films and are unable to accept he can do these kind of things, you should turn the DVD off and watch TV.
So after getting the criminals to safety he takes some cash and leaves, he is constantly talking about his rules and how they can’t be broken for the good of the job. When he gets back to his house he is quizzed by a local cop a few times about the bank job and if he was linked. Obviousely not new to the job or these police visits he sees the man off swiftly and is soon undertaking another job. So you learn that he is a Transporter of goods, takes them from A to B and asks no questions about the package, just gets it there safely and on time. He calculates the weight, distance, number of stops etc to provide a reputable service that has got his name passed about and therefore a lot of business. His next job is to take a package to someone else, unaware of what he is taking, a large bag is put in his boot and off he goes. Hearing some movement in the back he wonders what the package is, then remembers the first rule of never looking at the package. Finally he gives in to the temptation to look and finds an Asian woman tied and gagged in the bag, not being a bad person he lets her have a drink and then go to the toilet. When they get to the destination he acts as if nothing has happened and goes off, but asked by the receiver of the last package to take a new one, not being one to turn down a job he accepts and journeys to the next place. On a food stop the car is subject to being blown up by the package he was given. The last group he delivered to know he looked at the package and are out to take him out.
The film carries on from there to show how Statham’s character is ex army and a real badass, over the top fighting scenes with stunts that while impressive are at times a bit too much (along with his accent!), he gets wound up with the Asian girl trying to help her free a group of people who are being trafficked by no good thugs. The second half of the film is much more action based and for some people too much of it is over the top with Statham being untouchable. I personally enjoyed the film and welcome action scenes like this, as i had been told the film goes this way and so i was prepared for it. I would say if your a fan of cheesy action films with stunts which are visually pleasing but are too much at times then you will like the film, it has a nice plot to go alongside the action and excluding the accent Statham does a good job in the role of The Transporter. One i would recommend to watch as i found it an enjoyable hour and a half. Has some flaws with the plot not being original but watchable, scenarios that are over the top when the film tries to be serious in places, but all this aside, it is not that bad and worth a few quid to watch.
